Multivitamins. Do you take them?

i take them but not every day, plus i do them in combinations, vit c one day, fish oil the next day, multi day, b Complex day after there no point taking every single vit together some vit kill other vits so it ends up being useless.

I take a high strength multibit/min x 2 per day, 3grams of buffered C, around 500mg of Magnesium, a probiotic (the drinks advertised on tv aint much cop since they have sugar in normally - defeats the object), and I get my EFA's in my diet e.g. humous, flax oil, hempseed oil etc etc. Wouldn't be without the high strength basics

Since the soil is lacking the mineral Selenium you WON'T (excuse caps) get the nutrients from your food like you would have done say in the 1950's.

a probiotic are a waste of time, and contain way less than you think, if you really want to increase health then the 1st thing you need is to decrease the loss of vitamins from your body, you can do this by reducing your processed foods, drink milk and water only if you can get raw milk do it, however if youve never had raw milk best thing is to have a small glass first time and drink it every 2 days.

I take fish oils but I don't see the point in the extra vitamins as I eat a well balanced diet - I just don't eat as much fish as I'd like hence the fish oils.

A mate of mine started getting a weird metal taste in his mouth after taken certain vitamin tablets, I assume it was because he was taking too many in a short space of time?

Tried most supplements (probably around 200), but regularly take B Vits and Zinc, Eye Q Fish oils. Some have had no effect, some have made minor improvements to my daily life, others have made seriously major improvements. And I have a more balanced, healthier diet than ANYONE I know - but the supplements still make an improvement on my life.

And for anyone that states a balanced, healthy diet provides all you need - that's all very well, but some people still need more (depending on how your digestive system works, and how your food, diet is metabolised)

When I say that, I mean - one person can get 15mg of Zinc in his diet - and still absorb none of it (simply by eating the Zinc rich food item at the wrong time, with the wrong type of dinner) - whereas another person can eat the same amount, and absorb it all (simply by chewing it properly and having the necessary enzymes in his stomach to digest it) - And the same is true with fat / water based vitamins and minerals. Some people retain them well, others just pee them out and need constant supplementation. And as you get older, less and less of the good stuff is absorbed at a time when you need more.

So saying a healthy, balanced diet is all you need is a bit of a fallacy. Everyone is different. Try each vitamin and mineral (but research how/when to take them as this is very important) and see which has a marked effect on you. Just don't overdo it, as too much of any of them is very bad.

On a side note, If you are interested in Nootropics  try researching DMAE - It really is astounding & a bit more than a multivitamin - but it's effects are simply amazing, although not sure if it's properly approved in the UK - but it sure as hell works with regard to Focus and clarity of thinking & it just proves that supplements really do work.

Am I the only one that still eats this stuff then ? :o, I remember when I was younger I wasn't allowed to leave the house without having a spoonful :).

A balanced diet is correct for most people though. Things like zinc for example as you stated are blocked by calcium, so depending on what you have with it you may not absorb it, however things like magnesium NEED calcium to be absorbed, however too much vit D will cause it to leech out of your bloodstream... so your body is a very finely tuned machine.

The more varied and balanced your diet is the more chance you have of getting to correct combinations and getting the things you need into your body.

Some supplements or elements your body cannot extract or produce or digest without taking some supps (particularly true for anemics, diabetics, or even people interested in bodybuilding (things like EEAs)), but unless you've got a SPECIFIC reason to need that supplement why force your body to absorb it? Our bodies adapt to our environement and diets.. the reason why people in the west take so many supps is because they eat low quality foods in general to what our bodies were designed for and their diets do not contain the necessary elements that make us healthy. Even simple things like spending a little time in the sun to get soem vitamin D is hugely influencial.

So I disagree, diet is very important and should be addressed first before relying on supps.

if you're going to take them it's best to get them from here
Click
if you read what's inside them and compare them to supermarket ones you'll realise you're wasting money, i know these ones are a little more expensive but i've been taking them and don't seem to be ill or getting colds etc

Yep my body takes a fare beating from all the weight lifting I do so I try to take extra care of myself internally with seven seas advanced joint care (Glucosamine, Omega 3, Chondroitin) and Centrum complete multi vitamin from A - Zinc.

My diet has absolutely no processed foods in and I'm afraid that probiotics or prebiotics are worth taking, depending on your reasons for taking them in the first place. I'm talking about the 8billion per capsule as a minimum and dependent on the make too. You can obtain a good quality live yoghurt but you'll need a litre a day to approx get just 1billion bacteria which, let's face it, is impractical. If you kept on taking that everyday you'd probably eventually build a food sensitivity up anyway. If you have good digestion vitamin and mineral absorption will probably be more than adequate, just as long as you have no signs of a leaky gut etc. Glutamine will help etc...
