So here we go then...

1601 Alcohol, tobacco and petrol taxes will be raised to offset the VAT cut, Mr Darling says.

He gives with one hand and takes away with the other. Whats the betting the increase in fuel tax will do MORE than simply 'offset' the reduction in VAT?

A 1p increase in duty should have the effect of keeping current fuel prices the same as the reduction in VAT is worth about 1p off a 90p litre of unleaded.

I was hoping that the VAT reduction might help us see further lowering of fuel prices. I should have known better than to think that of Mr Darling.

However, I filled up on Friday for 89.9ppl....I would be happy if the prices at least stabilised around that mark. But as you say, a duty increase that outstrips the VAT reduction would not be surprising.

I think this was the already announced, but then postponed tax increase, when fuel prices shot up. It does seem to negate the point of a VAT cut though

Hope he gets run over by a big V8 Land Rover.

The Alcohol and tobacco I couldnt care about, its peoples choice to drink/smoke. Some people do NEED a car for work etc they dont just drive for the lolz kill the enviroment for the sake of it.

I agree.

Tax the people who are getting wasted / killing themselves. It also puts money back into the system for when we end up looking after them due to cancer etc...

Tax on cigarettes more than cover any health care that a smoker might receive. Also smokers die earlier generally so are less of a drain on the state financially in that respect. I'm not saying don't put the tax up on them - because I don't smoke, but your comment makes it sound like we are paying for them, when in fact it's actually already the other way round by quite a large factor. ;)

So, instead of paying £300+ for my 12 months tax next year, I will only need pay £30 more on top of the current system at the worst? (or £30 less, but I doubt that in my case!).

I work for a vehicle recovery company. Our fuel bills are massive, and we can claim our VAT from fuel. However, if fuel duty is going up to compensate this then this really does screw us a bit.

But the price of running a car will be less next week not more

Anyone who cannot see the reduction of VAT as a way to increase the ammount we get taxed as a whole is being short sighted and nieve. Then when VAT goes back up in a couple of years, the Government makes a net gain.

And wasnt it Gordon Brown saying it would be really bad to impliment short term fixes.....
