Nikon D80 or Canon 450D?

I already posted a thread a while back.. but I am waiting until after Christmas before I make the purchase, and will have a nice student loan to delve into (not all of it mind) so decided to go for a slightly more expensive camera.

If I buy the Canon I will probably pick up a nifty fifty at the same time, if I go for the Nikon I will have to stick with the kit lens for a while... if that helps.

Give whatever reasons for and against and be as biased as you like :p

Just thought I would post here for advice first and then try them out although I have used a Canon 1000D which seemed fairly comfortable (although I didn't get to use it for long) which I assume will be near identical to the 450D.

I will go next weekend when I get back from uni and have another look at them both and see how they feel, but I would like some info from anyone who owns the cameras or thinks I should go for one over the other. :)

Also any advice on what sort of lenses I should buy would be appreciated. I know I will get a 50mm for whichever camera I choose over time, but I'm not too sure what I should consider after that tbh...

the nikon handles better, the canon has a better focusing system and a much better sensor if you intend on doing anything in low light.

Tom.

Sorry, but what do you mean handles better?

Would it be best to buy the 450D and use the extra cash left over to save for a better lens? Or could I make do with the kit lens on the Nikon?

it is nicer in the hand, as it is larger, but that is purely subjective. the d80 is getting on a bit now, the 450D is technically a much better camera.

Ok I just wanted to make sure what exactly you meant... I have held the 1000D before and it seems to fit my hands well, so if the Canon is technically better.. it may be a better option then, plus it's cheaper...

Any advice on a good lens for taking shots of basketball games?

i actually prefer the older D70s to the D80, i don't think the D80 was ever really a strong point in the nikon line up. If you can squeeze the budget to ~£450 you could get a lightly used D200, which is a far superior camera.

As for lens for basketball, a 70-200 f/2.8 would most likely be your best bet, it will cost you though :/

no, 70-200 is NOT a good choice for basketball, f2.8 is too slow.

Get the 50mm f1.8 for now, and then the 85m f1.8 as funds allow.

The 450D will be a lot better for basketball than the d80, much better focusing system and low noiselevels.

That was with my old 20D and my Canon 85mm f1.8 USM, which is about £270ish now, DEFINITELY the best basketball lens on the market.

Stunning shot! I'm glad to see I won't have to spend around 800 quid for a suitable lens then.. lol

I will get the 50mm prob when I buy the camera and then hopefully the 85mm in the summer time then if funds allow...

rG-tom do you take many basketball shots?

Sweet. Im sure that was a great experience. :)

I will take you up on the offer of advice, as I'm sure I'll need it...
So what photography are you doing atm, if you dont mind me asking?

Just came across this link http://www.pbase.com/nh/450d_af_test
Not sure whether I should be worried by this or not, or if the guy is just having a rant for the sake of it...
Anyone care to give me their opinions on this?

I've used both a 450D and 1000D and they are both brilliant cameras, I currently have a 350D and it gets the job done.

I would personally recommend you get a 1000D, its cheaper and the difference between the 1000D and 450D are minor. Also you should invest more in lenses for your camera, because theres no point buying an amazing camera and using a cheap lens. You can pick up a 1000D with the stock lens for roughly £294 (inc £30 cashback) or you can get a 450D with the stock lens for around £388 (inc £50 cashback)

OR alternatively you could pick up a 450D body for around £344 and buy a more expensive lens.

It really depends on how much you're willing to pay, if you have the money, buy the 450D body and a nice lens, if you're on a budget, get the 1000D kit and a nice lens.

Just know that I personally believe its better to invest in lenses rather than the cameras :p

How about the 400D? How does that fit in?

I've got a 450D and think it's pretty dam sweet.

tbh, now I've gone Canon I wouldn't recommend anything else!! Plus theres the sweet advantage of getting £50 cash back!

:)

If you go for canon, dont get the kit. The canon kit lens isn't exactly great.
The complete opposite for nikon.
I dont think the 450 should be compared the the D80, thought the D80 was more similar to the 400.
In which case the 450 is a better choice.
I prefer my Nikon to Canon equivalents. This came from trying one in a shop. If you are able, find a shop and play.

Thanks again for the advice. :) Like blastman said the 50 quid cashback from canon is great and I could put that towards a lens...

If I buy body only avoiding the kit lens, what general purpose lens would you advise then?
I am still planning on buying the 50mm f1.8 btw...

the 18-55IS is far far better than the original none is, some people have actually gone out of their way to buy the IS version since it came out.
