How much blizzard make a month/year from World of Warcraft

What is new about new media comes from the particular ways in which they refashion older media and the ways in which older media refashion themselves in answer to the challenges of new media, consider this reference with reference to at least one case study film/game.

Many people sign up for multiple-month deals which discount the price, e.g. buy 6 months at once and I think it works out at 1 month free, just to throw another complication in there =P

I heard on a pc gamer podcast a few months back, that the amount spent on developing and running the game up to that point had cost £200,000,000. Of which i presume that the development costs take up a decent amount of that. So, they are making an absolutely huge amount of money every month.

as said, it includes asian gamers, which is a HUGE market in terms of WOW, who might buy 1 hour gametime in an internet cafe and not play again ever, or for 6 months, where they again pay £1 for a couple hours. Those all count as "subscribers", which isn't accurate, the number is still VERY big, but not quite that bit. I would also assume that there are a few countries that maybe pay more than us, but the UK is normally very expensive in terms of subscription, I wouldn't be remotely surprised if the USA players pay $9, which up till recently was a very very different number to ours, its still significantly cheaper(if that is the current cost).

then, probably in the next several months at least 6-7mil sales at £15 or $25 or something for the expansion. They make big big money.

Its also worth pointing out that while this makes, maybe, 500mil plus a year, its one game, nothing is remotely close to as successful in terms of money raked in. Most games aren't subscription based, most are a higher but one off fee that make substantially less money.

The 500-600mil profits it makes a year might be match by 5-6 films, a great year for films with Spiderman like numbers and 2-3 films might match it.

Its a touch easy to say game's make more money than films tbh, you can't just compared WoW to the biggest film profits ever and say, well this ones bigger, so its easily winning. Also most sales figures you hear for films aren't complete, the general numbers posted are the US box office sales, the money only just starts to role in there. THe porn industry is a subsection of the film industry and is a multi billion dollar a year industry, hell the porn industry probably dwarf's both gaming and normal film industry. :p

I'd guess that less than half the money they make from subscriptions is profit, much less. They have 2,700 employees and hosting the servers does not come cheap.

You're the kind of person who gets their nuts kicked up their throat on dragons den and then wonders why spouting off those kind of numbers :o

Just to clarify your equation:
Amount of subscribers (rounded to the nearest million) x the 1 month subscription cost = $$$ Blizzard's bank balance.

That couldn't be anymore wrong unless you added some kind of surrealist mathmatics to it.

I don't know what course you're doing but the only way you're going to get away with that is if most of your day is spent with your "lecturer" teaching how to draw pictures of mummy and daddy with crayons. Then occasionally someone writes a big number in the red crayon and shouts "this is how much games make" whilst pulling at their hair through an ill fitted safety helmet.

Server costs most be huge.
doubtful they arent serpeate servers ,one server runs multiple versions of the games server side software and they dont need to be very high spec as shown from people who host illegal wow servers on not very good computers
