Utterly pointless cars

Yea why not? The more cars you drive the more relevant your opinions become. Plus driving cars is fun.

I guarantee the line "my mum is considering a new car" was used in getting that test drive.

As I'm spending the day in a Mini Cooper Clubman today (No, the 530i isn't broken, so don't waste your time asking :p) and actually using it, I have come to the conclusion that its a completely pointless car and the stupid boot doors are a complete faff and an utter nuisance.

No sure I understand the logic here. I don't much like the MINI, but plenty of people do. However, no-one can deny that the bootspace in a MINI is anything short of pathetic. Since the Clubman gives you a MINI with a useable amount of boot space, why is it pointless?

Pointless cars? I'd vote for the "new Beetle", it's basically an overpriced Golf with some fancy bodywork that makes the car an awful lot harder to work on. Also the obligatory anyone who bought a 4x4 to do the school run option.

The new beetle is an incredibly popular good looking car (to the right person). I wouldnt have one, but my girlfriend for example loves them.

The toyota prius gets my vote, if you want to save the planet and penny pinch then get something truely economical, like a bluemotion.

Because you are going to kill your kids... so you may aswell buy a 2 seater pickup.

Audi A3. It's a Golf, only even more expensive.

Volvo 240 saloon. Right you've bought a cars which looks like the old Bullring Centre and corners even worse. Do you A, buy the one with the useful boot or do you B, buy the one with the signifcantly less usefull boot?

Golf plus...barely bigger than a golf and has more blind spots than you could think possible

Also anything made in France

It doesn't have much more boot space - my rucksack just fits, for example, and the doors are really a faff.

Skeeter, its not a test drive its a loan car.

Because Fox says it is :p

Although in some ways I agree, i've driven the Clubman now, and I liked it but there are things about it that do my head in.

E.G.
- The Suicide door on the wrong side
- The HUGE pillar in the back that stops you seeing anything

BUT like you say, the R56 in comparision to the R55 (The Clubman) in terms of bootsize, you can't fault it for that, which is why I know people who do infact have a family and own a R55 over any version of the hatch and say it does do the job.

Yea the rear visability is awful due to the pillar and opening the boot is just a complete pain. And you've got to remember to shut it in the correct manner or it won't shut. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

G-GIZ. Only suitable for putting dumb people in and telling them to drive at max speed into a concrete wall (well 30mph).

On another note a useful car was that old school volvo estate that had x2 foldout seats in the boot for kids. I really wanted my dad to have one so I could be in the boot with the things :D

Golf Plus also, a golf for the whale part of the population.

I had the displeasure of getting stuck behind a g-wiz a few weeks ago, was scared to overtake it incase it got blown over :p

Popular and good looking, but no actual point to them, they're just a slightly less useful Golf that costs more to buy and run in exchange for that prettiness. It's like an Apple MacBook with XP installed.

Agreed! The Prius is a complete con, actual MPG is closer to 45mpg and the hybrid technology doesn't save you that much at all (compare MPG figures for hybrid vs non-hybrid when both are available on the same model and the difference is about 2mpg) however it does have some valid reasons to get it.
1) Exempt from the congestion charge in London.
2) In the US the Prius is a small as Americans are prepared to buy and Americans simply wont buy diesels, plus California's emissions laws basically banned diesels in 2007 so the Prius is about as economic as it gets over there, even at a mere 45mpg
3) In the UK, it lets you know which people to avoid having a conversation with if you can't stand dealing with smug self-righteous idiots.

Ahh, but as a result of this Volvo saloons are worth nothing these days and can be bought for basically their scrap value despite being good reliable cars. I've just bought a 940 saloon for £200 with MOT and tax until March and the only thing wrong with it was the power steering belt needed tightening. It'll do nicely until my Cefiro finally arrives from Japan and I shouldn't need to do any maintenance on it, well apart from I just had to spend 60 quid on brakes.

When you're just after a cheap runner, a Volvo 240 saloon is an excellent choice.

Don't agree the point is you can get one without a roof, the only way you can get a golf without a roof is to crash it first.
