can I change my xbox live username?

I can see why they charge for it - to deter people from changing their name every 10 mins. However, i could think of better ways, how about you're limited to changing you name every 5000 gamerscore? So, you can only change your name once you have gained an extra 5000 score since your last change or something along those lines, with the option to pay for those that can't be bothered.

Not exactly a helpful post but yeah, thinking out loud i guess.

I agree.

However, I think the more sensible option would be to restrict it every 6 months or so. ;)

Limit it to 1 freee change a year. If you are using your Live within the boundaries of the agreement, I cannot see why you need to change more than once a year or less, any more frequent, you pay for the privilege.

Sounds good to me.

Just mass message everyone on your friends list, ask them to report your gamertag, wait a few days, then you will be prompted upon sign in to 'change your gamertag'.

Bobs your uncle, you got to change it for free.

I have a few people on my list, who keep changing it to something maybe racist, or nasty, and every few days, they get to change it again, so it seems they dont monitor it..

Yeah I get occasional messages off randoms asking for me to file report against them so they can change their names.

I should have gone down this route :D

Yeh same, i've had quite a few messages of recently played asking me to report abuse against their names. Does this actually work?

Does anyone know if I can change my live username/gamertag thingy?

I signed up to live for the first time yesterday and just picked a stupid name, that I now want to change.

Is this possible?

Cheers

if you only signed up yesterday then you wont have much on it. could you not just make a new gamertag and delete this one off your hdd and forget it ever exists lol?

If you have just created the account recently and are using the 1 month free Gold trial then you can simply make another new gamertag and use the second account instead (though I am not sure if you can have more than one gamertag tied to one email address). You can claim a maximum of four free trials (one trial for each new gamertag created) but you are not limited to having four gamertags on a single Xbox.

If you have paid for a subscription via credit card using the Xbox dashboard OR have registered a pre-paid Xbox Live! subscription card against your account then you will either have to pay 800 MS points to change your gamertag OR try the suggested reporting of your account (though as mentioned by others this is meant to be used to report names which are offensive or break the Xbox Live! EULA terms and conditions).

thanks Zico,

I have just signed up for the 1 month free and didnt want to delete my gamertag in case it canceled my free trial.

So do you mean i can delete my profile then sign back into live for a months free trial, and i can do this 4 times and get 4 months free?

That is excellent if so!!

You don't have to delete the unwanted gamertag before you create a new one.

You can do one of the following:

1) Create a new gamertag with your preferred name (if available) now and get another one month free trial on the new gamertag (you won't loose the first gamertag or time remaining for the trial).

2) Continue with your current gamertag until the trial expires at which point you can create a second account* (with your preferred name) and gain another one month free trial.

OR

3) Maximise the most out of the four free trials (by repeating option 2) and create a third and forth gamertag after each trial expires**.

* You cannot carry over any gamerscore points/history which has been built up on each gamertag (but you can of course re-acquire the achievements by unlocking them on the new gamertag - if you pay 800 MS points and change gamertag officially then your gamerscore will be carried over).

** Choose your preferred name for the forth gamertag and trial.

The only thing I am not sure about is if you can have multiple gamertags tied to a single email address.

When I signed up for Live one month ago, I remember seeing that it was free to change the gamertag in the first 1-3 days. When I checked a few days later, it changed to x MS points. It may have changed now under the NXE.
