best cards for <£100 and <£150

my friend is after a new gfx card, budget will be <£100 or <£150, hes not sure so im gonna find 2 cards for them prices.

for the under £100 ive found this

384MB XFX 9600GSO XXX, PCI-E 2.0
Core Clock: 680 MHz
Shader Clock: 1700 MHz
Memory: 384MB

its not from this site so no direct link, is there anything better for under £100?

and

for under £150 i am not sure on what to reccomend, so can someone spec a card for £150 ish, under but not over if poss.

For the under £100 mark i would say the 8800gt 512mb, can be had for £70 from a certain retailer as overclockers no longer stock them
 
4850 mite be his best bet then, he has a 24" monitor and his card is on the way out so its prob worth him stretching to £150.

For under £100:

Nvidia - 9800GT/8800GT available between £80 and £90

ATI - HD4830 - although only if you can find one below £100. At >£20 more than the 8800GT it isn't worth it


For under £150:

Nvidia - 9800GTX+

ATI - HD4850
 
How about a 8800 Ultra for £139? How do those compare to a 4850? Yes you can still find them in stock if you look hard. But I'm not sure if it's better or worse than a modern card.
 
Wow, just looked on the Tomshardware VGA charts and the 8800 GTX and Ultra's still seem to compare quite favourably against the more modern cards; about the same speed as a 4850 512mb in some games and slightly faster in others. Quite surprised really as I though it wouldn't be able to compete as well.

Seems to make sense (especially for the Ultra) as they have monstrous memory bandwidth and more outright memory than the 4850 so higher resolutions should benefit.

The difference is small though so its a tough call between the two. Personally I would choose the 4850 simply due to its lower power draw for the same performance.
