Are microwaves going to kill me?

I'd tell your flatmates that it is scientifically proven that people who breathe in air will get cancer.

I think normally you actually let it stand for the heat to basically even out as the centre and any liquid bits will usually get much hotter. I suppose the same end result though, the hottest bits aren't too hot

Like has been said, unless the microwave oven is old, and the seals are not intact, there will be no leakage at all. The front windows has holes just smaller than the wavelength if the microwave. If theres any gaps, they may escape and irradiate your cat.

Microwaves do not cook from the inside out. They go from the outside in. Just like shining a torch on a football does not make the middle of it light up.

Leaving it to stand is to let the heat even out (correct) and so people don't immediately shove a scalding hot pastie in their gob.

does the centre normally get hotter because the centre is often more liquid then?

Doesn't that saying come from there generally being more water to get hot inside food (and people etc) than on the surface? My understanding isn't particularly scientific and I know the microwaves heat more than just water, but presumably there's more of this stuff on the inside than the out?

IIRC, microwaves only "heat" water. What they do is produce microwaves of the same resonance of water, which then causes the water to resonate, causing heat to be produced, cooking the surrounding stuff that isn't water.

Also, i think microwaves only penetrate about 1cm into the actual object being cooked.

Well they say wifi and mobile phones emit radiation and mobile phone companies have to print the radiation levels in their manuals etc... The earth is constantly bombarded by solar radiation, and I notice the local hospital here uses wifi points in each corridor so who knows. Burnt food is meant to cause cancer too...
There's no escape...

Erm, I may be inadvertently "researching" this since I eat scrambled eggs from the microwave just about every morning :eek::p

The radiation from a microwave oven in use is meaured as lower than that from a cell phone, providing there is something in it. An empty oven can radiate quite a lot as the microwaves then try to escape (damages it anyhow, why would you be doing this?).

The guy claims his gran got killed by a microwave as it gave her cancer.... Since when would doctors say, I'm sorry, but the cause of your gran's cancer is the fact she used microwaves all the time..

They say leave for 1 minute for two reasons....mainly to stop you scolding yourself, secondly to allow microwaves to dissapate.
 
I've never met your housemates, doubt I ever will. But know this; I hate them.

They clearly know nothing of physics, so what makes them think they can scaremonger you into believing something they once heard down the pub from some guy!
