Sorry if this thread doesnt meet normal Motors standards or anything, But i was just thinking...

Whenever I get out of my car I seem to skuff the inside of the door with my shoe, Now this probably wouldnt happen if doors opened the opposite way around.

Is there any particular reasons doors all open like this?, because if they opened the other way i think it would be more natural for climbing in and out of them.

(cant really picture it in my head properly, but maybe you get what I mean. Lets say the Hinge was where the handles are now :)

It would probably look crap, which might be why! lol

Other than the disadvantage that gave this type of door its name, the door arrangement also has other disadvantages, and instills other negative perceptions.

While the vehicle is parked, such a door could hide an entering or exiting passenger from the view of passing cars. The result of the door being hit by another vehicle would be catastrophic since the door would be slammed shut onto the passenger,[11] although, it could otherwise spread the force of the colliding vehicle.
If, in an emergency, the user exits the vehicle whilst it is moving forward, the door will hit them upon exit.[6]
Another problem presented by conventionally hinged doors in front and suicide doors in the back is a passenger traffic conflict. It is almost impossible for passengers to exit from the front and rear seats simultaneously due to the limited space between the front edge of the rear door and the rear edge of the front door.

simple factor is if you park the right way on a street (ie your side of the road), open the door and half way through getting out, the door is hit by another car......the way we have them atm, they will just rip the door off. Other way, they'd crush you. That's why doors that open the wrong way are called suicide doors (a lot of people call lambo style upsliding doors suicide but they're not)

All doors should be gullwings :D

Although that renault avantime had quite cool double hinging doors for a run of the mill car.

Another problem with suicide doors is that if some muppet forget to close it and drives off they are blown open by the wind rather than being held shut. If you then go up to dual carriageway speeds (easily done if you just stopped for a picnic or phone call) you could do some damage

And yes, another vote for gullwing doors here

Isn't there a roller or some similar type of barge that has rear suicide doors? Seem to remember seeing something like this on Top Gear.

EDIT: Found it on google, Rolls Royce Phantom
