Utterly pointless cars

The Focus 4 Door has a massive market outside of the UK, it's easier to get into the rear seats than the hatchback and is a saloon, (i know i know, there is an attraction to have a saloon.) It's smaller than the gargantuan mondeo and is a lot cheaper too.

Basically a 4 door saloon. Only, the hatchback is more popular here. You may go ahead and ask why there is a 4 door Fiesta in other markets......i dont know the answer to that.

I noticed a similar trend while I was living in South Africa. Whereas over here small families would tend to have a hatchback Focus, Astra etc or something bigger like a Mondeo, Vectra and so on, over there there was a big market for saloon versions of the Polo, Corsa, Astra etc.

Saloons are bloody rubbish design wise, i find mine totally crap and they annoy me daily.

However,

Name one good hatchback, all good cars are saloons unless you get an estate or a 4x4 :(

I cahn't think of a preference to saloons over an estate or the cross-platform saloon/hatchbacks like the Mondeo. The saloon doesn't have any advantage over the hatchback or estate other than looks. Unless I'm missing something in my tired state.

The only thing I can think of is that the boot on saloons is often more secure than those on hatchbacks (unless you can open the boot from inside the car!)

2 seater 2 wheel drive faux 4x4. Completely useless.

You confuse good with old crap from the 80's.

It was good in it's day. He didn't specify that it had to be a modern hatchback.

Toyota Glanza V then? Subaru Vivio RX-R?

Edit: What about that V6 clio with the engine in the boot, can't remember the model, also that Nissan Micra with the 350Z engine in the back :)

Oh you wanted 4 seats, ok that's a bit harder, Nissan Sunny GTi-R with a few gearbox upgrades ;)

I'll agree that there's not many good hatchbacks in the 00s, maybe the Ford ASBO, these days the market is basically split into econobox hatchback, big luxury saloon, MPV, 4x4, 2 seater coupe and ridiculous supercar.

Again, all complete and utter none-sense :p

By good i mean on par with good cars, such as a Mercedes Benz CLS/S-class, BMW 7-series/high end 5-series, Audi A8 QS's, etc.

Hatchbacks are just all lame, i'd love one but i cant think of a single one which is plausible to own. Several of us went through every option on IRC and couldnt come up with a single example :(

that would be the Clio V6 then :D

Edit: ^^^^^ yeah, that's the one.

Hatchbacks serve a completely different market, you seem to be after luxury cars and whenever anyone tries to make a luxury hatchback they just get laughed at (BMW 1-series, Audi A3/S3, Merc A-Class)

That said a BMW 130 could be a lot of fun :)

Personally I prefer medium size fast cars that are fun to drive, the huge executive barges you mention all seem too big and disconnected from the driving experience for my tastes.

"Good" for me is different to "good" for you.

If i want a fun car hatches are still crap, name me a hatch which is on par with a 997 C4S or a V8 Vantage etc? We covered fun cars too.

Was this an IRC channel for city bankers?

You can adjust the budget in any direction and they still make no sense. You can get a 996 C2 for virtually nothing now so its hardly a discussion only about expensive cars, and while one of my mercs is expensive the s-class in my sig which also happens to be my massive mileage daily driver is worth about 50p.

Mk1 and 2 Golf GTi, Peugeot 106 Rallye, 205GTi, 306 GTi-6 and Rallye, Renault R26.R. Probably more fun, more of the time and with less risk to the licence. Won't hit the same highs on those rare perfect days though.

Well obviously that isn't going to happen, for one hatchbacks just aren't aerodynamic enough, and once you start stretching them and lowering the back end down to fix that they stop being called hatchbacks and start being called coupes. No manufacturer is going to waste time putting the engine and technology from the likes of the Vantage into something that's going to handle terribly.

I'd argue that you don't need something like a 997 or a Vantage in order to have a bit of fun though.

If you look in the price ranges that are achievable by more than a select few of the population then there are some hatchbacks that can compare well to their saloon and coupe competitors

Personally I couldn't properly enjoy a V8 Vantage unless it belonged to someone who I hate and they'd signed a disclaimer saying that they'd pay for any and all damage, scrapes dents etc.
