Most 18yr olds couldn't afford to get insured on a proper hot hatch anyway, even the likes of the Ford ASBO are out of reach of the typical 18yr old.
Jez obviously comes from a rich background, has a good education and now has a decent job and a decent living, fair play to him, I can respect that (a lot more than I can respect someone who has rich parents and does bugger all to earn their own wage)
For those of us with more modest salaries hot hatches can offer a decent amount of bang for the buck and can compete pretty well in terms of fun with similarly priced saloons and coupes (don't forget to include running costs before you look at that cheap Porsche!) whilst still offering a sufficient amount of practicality for someone who doesn't want to run two cars.
FWIW I don't own any sort of hatchback, hot or otherwise (last one I owned was a Mk4 Escort 6 years ago) so I don't have any sort of axe to grind. My last car was a Subaru Legacy B4 RSK twin-turbo (a sporty 4wd saloon) and I'm in the process of replacing it with a Nissan Cefiro SE-4 (a sporty 4wd saloon, based on the R32 Skyline and S13 200SX). I still have a lot of respect for a decent hot hatch though, be it a Mk2 Golf GTI, a Ford ASBO, Sierra Cosworth, RS Turbo, for the money they're damn good.
But then I don't care about whether a given car impresses a bunch of city w... erm... bankers
