So HD4870 or GTX 260 ?!

Sold my 4870 512mb last week and picked up a EVGA 260-216 from OCUK today, IMO if you can afford the 260 then get it, it does perform better than the 4870 and has better minimum frame rates, overclock the 260 to what I have, 680 GPU-1150 MEM and then your looking at GTX 280 performace.

You say you are pro Nvidia, the Nvidia card is only £20.00 more and it is a solid performer and is very much up to the job of competing with the ATI, it sounds like you've already talked yourself into the Nvidia and just want to make sure there are no horror stories, there are not so go buy it

I know this has been covered but I just dont seem to be able to get a reliable answer to this one.

Im VERY pro nVidia, having never really liked or got on with ATi stuff, however the new 4870 series has drawn my interest I know they perform very similarly to the 260, but which is truly the superior card ?

I use a 24" monitor and play games like Farcry2/Crysis Warhead/also some MMO's.

I've also heard stories of 4870's failing a lot which doesnt fill me with hope tbh with you. I can get the ATi card for maybe £20 cheaper than the 260.

Cards in question would be:

ATi HD4870 1GB.
nVidia GTX 260 896MB Maxcore.

Thanks

Is it worth the extra getting pre-overclocked cards like the 260 black edition? Or do stock cards overclock well anyway?

Some used to claim any can OC but its not guaranteed, least one thats OC'd out the box is.

I know EVGA cherry pick Cores (I posted the interview with them long ago) so the best Cores get used on the SSC/AC3S cards.

This could mean all the duff Cores go to normal cards but its hard to say for sure.

Ok I think I've made up my mind........the GTX 260 is the card I will get.
Now, do you think the XFX GF GTX 260 Black Edition would be the best 260 to buy or just settle for a cheaper version?

Like I said, I purchased the stock EVGA 260-216, and my current clocks are 680 GPU and 1150 MEM, so they already surpass the OC models clocks. Of course your not guaranteed these clocks but I would'nt pay the premium for OC models when you can do it yourself for free.

Seems the jury is still out on this 1 then, to be honest I think I'm gonna plump for a GTX260 purely cos I'm a bit of an nVidia fanboi :p

Got my Evga GTX260-216 Core today and absolutely love it so far. Definately a stonking card and from what I have seen spanks my 4870 512MB by a good 15% with the 180.48 drivers. IQ is slightly more natural looking as the ATI tend to look a little too sharp to me as their filtering is very precise and sometimes this makes gfx look a little plastic in places. The extra Vram does make a difference to games as they appear faster due to less texture compression but I do not know how they compare to the 1GB 4870 as I do not own one of those.

Think my 4870 is going to be sold now & I will pick up another GTX260-216 Maxcore for my other PC as I am sold on them being good VFM & very strong performers (probably 3rd fastest single card solution after the 4870X2 + GTX280. Also very quiet and so far I have not been able to get the card to hit 60C even though the central heating has been on for hours:eek:

Did you get a pre-OC EVGA?
I'm trying to decide between BFG or EVGA...

No as I did not need the extra bandwidth for another £50!! Prefer EVGA to BFG anyway as they also do a stepup in 90 day program. Not sure a GTX260-216 is worth £270-280 when GTX280 is only a little more. £220-250 is the most I would spend on one. Tomorrow I may buy another but will probably just go for a 2nd Core 216 as in my experience the preoced ones are more likely to need an RMA than not at some time due to the vram failing as its closer to the limit and the difference in real world FPS is minor at best anyway!!

9800GX2 is faster than the GTX260-216 except for cases where SLI isn't working properly (and possibly extremely high res/AA when the VRAM limitation kicks in).

Personally I think NV are onto a winner with this card as they've managed to keep the price down under £200 meaning that people won't be going for the 4870 1GB purely on price.

Both roughly the same. It'll destroy any game (even on 2560 x 1600) APART from Crysis. Pick whichever company is your favourite if you have one. I went for the 4870 since I got it for cheap. I've owned both Nvidia and ATI in my life and both companies are great.
