OcUK topics - why are some friendly than others?

Secondly the first few responses are key to how the thread will usually pan out. Yes, one post later on can divert a thread easily but the mood of the first couple of respondees is important.

I know that if I respond negatively as the first poster in a thread that hasn't been started very well by the OP the thread is not going to go well. That's partly because there are some sheep around here too though.

Absolutely. If a thread is started and a moderator / 'cool guy' highlights a weakness early on, everyone piles in with the ":/" "" "FAIL" etc. Unless I decide I actually want to post a response myself, I'll just quit reading after scrolling down a few posts of that drivel.

Likewise the 'reputation' of the OP matters. I've seen forum deities post plenty of self-indulgent tripe that would have got shot down in flames had it come from MrAvErAgE whose been here 6 months and has a couple hundred posts. Yet some people can get away with posting almost any nonsense without risking a backlash.

Heck, since becoming a MOH I'm sure I get quoted more often, and it's not like I've suddenly started talking more or less sense this year.

I dont think at any point I've ever implied you were.

Well (perhaps a don could confirm this) you posted in 5/6 threads before you posted in mine (obviously thats not a crime!) and only posted in my thread when some-else had posted a message of above 5 lines, just my scripts it might well be wrong. Anyhow sent the message of "I dont really care about this idiot". Sorry if that is incorrect

Whoa, got paranoia?

What? I saw your thread, read it, and posted a reply answering a question you'd asked. My first reply in your thread was a concise and explanative answer to your question about why one car cost more to insure than the other. How on earth does that send the message 'I dont really care about this idiot'

There are a few factors in this.

Firstly, the attitude of the OP and their ability to set up a decent opening post with proper structure and readable text.

Secondly the first few responses are key to how the thread will usually pan out. Yes, one post later on can divert a thread easily but the mood of the first couple of respondees is important.

I whole heartedly agree with what this great man is saying.

BWAHAHHAHA

*groan*

That's a side issue, of course. I talk a lot of sense but if someone is seen to be agreeing with me then you can pretty much guarantee that at some point someone else will read their post as sycophantic.

Whoa, got paranoia?

ha ha ha no. I see your point though! For me I asked a very simple simon question which is indentical to "spec me a £200 PC" which I Know, without blinking I'd help out on in GH. That's the entire point of my thread, not a dig at Fox or anyone, just why does that difference between specing a car and PC exist, jesus I'd buy Fox or any of those guys a pint tomorrow,

EDIT offer of pint exclues premium pints like Stella, pint must be obtained in the presencse of dangerstat, dangerstat with holds the right to refuse pint offerage at any time

True. Probably best you not post at all then.

:D

This thread is very confusing. I agree that sometimes potentially good threads are trashed by idiots, and vice versa. However, I see none of that here?!

dangerstat; Your behavior is very odd in my opinion. Quite like a stalker. Also, what would your 'scripts' be?

I'm learning perl my scripts do all sorts mate:p

Like I say I think Fox et al have been very useful and given me some real ideas to think of what to get car wise.

At the same time, honestly, what do I think Fox means? I think Sir your very stuck up, a classic BMW "nice" series owner who doesn't get that I dont want a BMW becuase I can get one cheap, you think I secretly want an expensive one.I think you feel a 316 is not really a proper BMW. I think you didn't reply to my thread because it didn't have enough 1,000's in it to get Rotty taking an interest. That's what I think

people here arent bots, they wont post replies conforming to programming rules or even common sense in some cases.
forget scripts for reading posts

Nah nah you get all wrong its about understanding a web page in front of me (or it) just testing parsers

You are partly right and partly wrong. I don't think it's any secret that I dislike the 316 - I've said so publically in many other threads. But I replied to the thread as soon as I noticed it, I didn't wait for other people first. Also you didnt mention the 316 until later anyway did you?
