Me too :D

No way am i moving out yet, far too expensive and i quite enjoy spending my money on cars  Far too much of an easy life at home ....

Damn Surreyite :D

Tempted to move back home for a year, just so I can save up to £5k more for a house deposit. But London is soo much fun.

OP, get a car more suited to your age and driving experience, and don't waste money on one of these SLs, as said your insurance will be sky high, and it won't have the servicing costs of a cinquicento. But most importantly I very much doubt you have the driving ability to handle one of these cars properly, typical young driver wants big RWD car syndrome from where I'm standing.

I hope this is tongue in cheek, otherwise the mentality that someone with a nice car is automatically a "******" is a bit saddening.

Winkie. Smilie. Painfully. Obvious :)

You guys are unbelieveable. Maybe the OP is wasting our time, maybe he's being genuine, however the way you lambast ANYONE that you take a dislike to, I find disgraceful. Sure I may be naive and this person (OP) may well be a time waster etc... but give him the benefit of the doubt dammit. I really cannot stand this aggressive negative behaviour I have seen on the forums recently. What is it with you guys? Why do you feel compelled to be so negative and aggressive? Why is it such a big deal to you even if he is "wasting your time" - I put that in inverted commas because really you're on an internet forum wasting time anyway.

Yes I know we've had a lot of time wasters and jokers and idiots posting rubbish threads, but so what? Humour them. Or, god forbid, don't answer them!? Of course you're all free to answer and have the opinion you want, but it's the way you lambast and prey on people and hunt in packs. I've met a lot of you personally, and whilst you're all charming, fun and placid people in person, you don't half behave like idiots on here. Most of you wouldn't even say boo to a ghost so I don't understand why you're being so tough on everyone on the forum.

Motors used to be a close knit group of dare I say it, friends or people of like minded thinking, who although disagreed about soem things, all shared one common thing. A passion for cars, whether they be bangers or luxo barges. Yes, we're wildly opinionated but that doesn't stop you being courteous in the way you address people on the forums, even those who you may consider to be lesser forumites.

Sure, I may well end up with egg on my face if the OP turns out to be a 12year old looking for a laugh, however, imagine if you didn't have the infamy that you have on here, and you asked about a relatively expensive car and insurance problems, and got ripped to pieces - you'd either a) leave, b) stand your own and fight back c) build up a defensive personality on the forums. I don't care about being proved wrong, I don't have that ego problem that seems to be prevelant on here.

I have to say well done to the OP for not biting or rising to the bait and holding his own. I hope he IS telling *** truth, but so what if he isn't? The jokes on him ultimately isn't it? What difference does it make to you? So what if he/she is trying to be "cool"? Does it really make you that mad? Surely there are more important things to get wound up about, like the cost of living, the cost of motoring, being able to have time off at Christmas, unemployment etc...

I don't want this place to turn sour, and it really is starting to head this way. Can I ask that we make an effort to be more welcoming and patient, and even slightly naive to some of the people posting here... the time wasters will soon get bored and go. Let's go back to the way Motors was 2 years ago when all the threads, whilst some were contentious were exciting, interesting and there were a few moments of idiocy "portable suns" etc.... However that wasn't a witch hunt, which we seem to be turning everything into now.

As a leaving comment - there were several posts which came close to personal attacks, I have let them slide, but purely because it hasn't escalated. Can we all grow up a little please and behave like adults.

Thanks.

I'll address the Freefaller thing first. I think there is quite a lot of nostalgia going on there - I can't remember a time when Motors was previously like watching an episode of Fluffy Bunnys in Cuddle Land but I can remember that every year for 6 years somebody has said 'its not like it was last year anymore' in much the same way that old people everywhere think the second world war was the nicest time ever. Every single 'bust' you mention, some of those back as far as 2003, started out as a witch hunt. Must admit I was suprised by merlins personal attack but the lol helped me deal with it.

And now Mr Mercedes.

So why the scepticism?

It is clear from the OP and previous threads posted by the OP that, frankly, he's not that into cars really.

Not that this is a problem.

But he's posted threads like 'I have a Renault Clio, do I need to service it? Whats a service? Sometimes I make the tyres squeel' and he's demonstrated a complete lack of any idea whatsoever as to whats involved in running a car like an SL350. The first thing he's done is get some random insurance quotes and then have a bit of cry. Insurance ceases to become the most important thing about car purchase once you stop being 18 so the fact that when buying an SL its still the first thing he's had a cry over further suggests a lack of understanding.

Then we've got the whole 'it must be an SL350' thing without even knowing anything about the SL350. I mean come on guys, when I bought a 1200 quid snotter years ago the first thing I did when I decided to buy one is spend an entire 20 seconds looking up things like the engine size. Infact its listed beside the insurance group on most websites. Yet this dude hadn't even bothered. Then he says it has to be an SL350 because he cant afford to run an SL500. He won't entertain the idea of an SL500 and he wont listen to people who clearly know better than he does. He genuinelly thinks an SL350 is in reach and al SL500 isn't.

It is true that an SL350 is cheaper to run than an SL500 but only in the same way that paying back the national debt of the UK is cheaper than paying back the national debt of the USA. Both will offer running costs of biblical proportion compared to a Renault Clio 1.4 he didnt even know he had to service. If you have to ask, you cannot afford, if an SL500 is out of reach, then so too is an SL350.

For what? The bling? I think thats exactly what its for - the bling. If I had an apartment in central Birmingham the first thing I'd want is... well, I'd want to move somewhere less awful, not park an SL350 on the street outside. What's he going to do with it? Park outside the Bullring listening to Gangsta Rap pulling da honeyz? Everybody likes a flash car but if he just wants to pose with his bling Mercedes there are some considerably cheaper ways of doing it!

I don't doubt he wants an SL350 - this much is true. But I do doubt he has even the slightest clue what he's doing, I do doubt he has any idea how much it costs to run and I do doubt he actually can run it. Gurdas's example is flawed - a 35-40k a year job is not really sufficient to run this sort of car and live in an apartment by yourself. It's a nice dream but a dream is all it is.

Especially when it's a dream from the guy who bought you 'Where can I hire a Mercedes C class, or should I buy one' and 'Look! My champagne is expensive!' or even 'How do I get broadband'. Talented grads can earn 35k from Uni. It's rare, but it happens. But it's talented grads. And talented grads dont need to ask the internet how to order broadband. Even people with an IQ of less than 100 living in central Plymouth can manage that.

So, the OP. Not a liar, but a bit of a dreamer who has no idea what he wants and is now copping a load of flack when all he really wanted was a bit of bling.

Buy a 1999 SLK320.

My point was that we assume instantly that everything is a lie, a bluff a **** take... surely you're not the cynical in real life? Surely you just accept that some things are as they are?

Yes the witch hunts happened, but in general it was behind the scenes, and whilst a lynching of someone that has tried to pull the wool over the eyes of his fellow forum members is understandable, there wasn't this thirst for blood that every thread seems to draw.

I don't want things to be pink and fluffy - motors don't tend to be like this. However at the same time the balance swings far too far the other way to the **** level. It's getting that balance.

A sharp wit and a bit of sarcasm is always good, but unnecessary destruction of threads just to prove a point seems to me to be a bit of a daft pass time. Surely in the time it takes for someone to ridicule someone if they really wanted to be helpful to the forum they'd spend that time to reply to 3 other threads in a more useful way.

Regardless of what car the OP is interested in he just wanted help with insurance. Give him the details of some insurance companies to try and that's that. The thread would have fallen off the bottom of the page. As it happened it turned out to be an unfortunately aggressive and destructive thread and I don't get why people are keen for blood these days! I guess people are spending more time at their computers because they are working longer hours and become a bit more fractious as a result - but seriously, read back the way posts come across to you and have a bit of a think as to how it could be taken.

There's a difference between being fluffy and naive, to being courteous but assertive.

edit: Fox, that reply is more like what I'd expect from you (I'd dread to see what you're like when you take a dislike to someone though! ;) - you've proved my point, thank you.

Hoo-Rahhh, at last somebody who posted something worth reading :) TBH we're not all geared the hilt on info on cars, just cause the OP doesn't know the exact details of the car to me personally means nothing, for example I went to have a look at an M3 last year but at the time I didn't know much about M3s including what size engine it had, just knew I liked it and that was good enough for me. :)

That depends on your priorities but anyone who still lives with their parents when approaching their mid 20's is a bit of a "special case" :p

I can't imagine still living with my parents. Even staying at home for a week does my head in now. I wouldn't move home again even if it meant I could afford a Veyron. I can understand that some people would rather have exotic metal instead but there's more to life than cars.

Well it depends on peoples lives at home. You say you can't stand it, but I love going home and I've lived out now for almost 4 years. I love the independence I get living out but when I go home it's just pure luxury.

I need to be in the city because of what i'm doing and I do enjoy it, but if I didn't need to be here and I could work from anywhere, home would certainly be an option I wouldn't turn down.

Just want to make a point about this, it's not rare to be earning 35k as a grad in London, it's pretty common actually and you would be surprised at the lack of common sense people have at this high level of education. I'm not making excuses for the guy, but i'm just saying, that i've been to two top tier world ranked uni's yet when you speak to some of these guys, you'd think they should be at Luton....or Plymouth:p

This thread probably wouldn't have started if the OP had just got out the Yellow Pages, used google and used all the compare sites and used the forum search function for insurance company names/recommendations [loads of insurance threads on here all recommended the same handful of companies] and went and got as many insurance quotes as possible - this would have gotten him the answer he was looking for - that he can either get insurance for £4000 or insurance for less. Just being lazy imo.
