Not sure if anyone can help, but im looking for a 'mellow' strategy game. Dont get me wrong, i like a blast on an FPS, and really like supCom, but at the moment, im finding i dont have the time, or am too tired to give any of these any real thought (particularly supCom!).

I have been looking for a strategy game with no set goals, that doesnt necessarily revolve around fighting. I thought sins of a solar empire would fit the bill - develop planets, manage resources etc but in the end it still all comes down to fighting. The only strategy game i have ever owned that remotely fits the bill is simCity - but i've played that to death over the years!

I've never played any of the civilisation series (turn based sort of puts me off, although im open to new things!), but can sort of imagine that some of these may fit the bill? Any other sugestions?

Thanks for reading, advice is welcome!

You don't want combat? Just to be able to make something?

Try any of the "Tycoon" series. Railroad, rollercoaster (Personal fave) etc etc.

i too enjoyed the railroad tycoon game :)

what about the footy manager games?

looking forward to seeing this thread develop...

lol psychas did you just read the word "RTS" and then hit reply?

yea then i though about it what kind of rts he wants but could bother editing it.

starcraft is fast based rts heavily tactically based :p that needs loads of skill.

settlers 2 did u play it u might like it easy going game.

homeworld 2 epic game but hard

Transport Tycoon Deluxe is what you want. It's simple, enjoyable, addictive. Once you've built a couple of rail networks and watched the steam engines chugging peacefully around, you'll be hooked.

Thanks for the suggestions - i have fond memories of the original rollercoaster tycoon... so many hours wasted! Same with transport tycoon (aaaaggggesss ago), although getting that to run on DOS was a little hit and miss for me! I did have settlers 2 (or 3?) - have no idea where that would have disappeared to.

@psychas - never have played starcraft (!), although a lot of people are looking forward to the sequel - i'll probs have a look at it then.

I've thought about it a little more after the suggestions, and perhaps i should be a little more specific - its not that i dont like combat in games. I like the empire building part of most RTSs, and fine micro management, but i would like to be able to choose to whether or not to actually have to fight. Fottball manager is the type of game im after - never ending, lots of choice etc, but im not a football fan, which pretty much rules that out! :D

Galactic Civilisation 2 Ultimate Edition

You dont need to fight to win and it is just like Sins of a Solar Empire

Starcraft + expansion should cost you £3 so even though it may not be exactly what you're after it's well worth a punt.

Demigod is good if you don't want to burn too much time, you can do a round in twenty minutes. It does revolve around combat though.

Total war? i know you can fight, but i think it has a auto fight in it as well so you just look after the logistics. But not 100% sure on that, will have to check it out.

Still, the fights are amazing on graphics and worth looking at now and again.

Sins is just a teeny bit prettier ;)

True, but graphics dont make the game and anyway he stated he didn't like the fact that you had to do space battles to win and in GalCiv2 you don't!

Plus its hella more relaxing when you can go make the tea and come back to where you left off.

if you want a proper RTS don't waste your time with starcraft or anything, though starcraft is a great game is so straightforward its not really 'strategy' since it really requires very little strategy, get supreme commander its overall better strategy game, looks decent and sometimes requires lots of tactical thinking, plus the strategic zoom (yeah i know sins has it too) is such a good feature for the type of game, you never have to scroll anywhere! if your after building games rollercoaster tycoon 3 + addons is a blast, best theme park game around, sim city 4 is good too (but refuses to work with vista x64), i have a city building game called 'city life 2008' thats alright :)
