Can anyone with experience please tell me what happens when you cancel Sky. I saw a clause in their contract that says they want a months' notice. Do they normally do that, and if so, do they cancel service at the end of that month or straight away? (when I've cancelled channels before they went straight away).

Thanks.

OK - cool - thanks. That confirms that I need to get everything off the Sky+ box this week then. I thought that would be the case. If they want to offer me free stuff then I'll bite, but I'll make them work damn hard for it. New (refurb acceptable) box for starters - I've got an original Sky+ box with an ailing (though still working) hard disk.

I'm having V+ installed in a week or so, upgrading to VIP package. Have yet to cancel my Sky but will do when the V+ is installed. Will be saving £50 plus per month! They can grovel all they like but I've been with Sky for 10 plus years and they have never offered me a thing.

you're in a good bargaining position - when you say you want to cancel they should put you through to cancellations/retentions? and they will most certainly offer you a sweet deal to keep you.

i done it with o2 on my contract and im just about to do it with sky......got a good deal from o2 and hopefully get a good one from sky.

No deals with sky at the moment, absoulte waste of time I'm afriad. The best your going to do is a cheaper sky+ box.

Cancelation is a 30day notice period.

We've had a bit of trouble with them to be honest.

First, their contractory people (Campbell & Kennedy) installed it. We had no end of problems. We didn't get most of the channels, including bbc 1, etc, and it wouldn't record anything either.
When we phoned C&K up to see if they'd fix it they kept fobbing us off, promised we'd get a phone call to let us know what was happening, or that someone would come round to fix it.

This all happened within the first week or two.

We phoned to get in cancelled and they told us to phone Sky directly. They then told us to inform them in writing and we got a letter back telling us it was C&K problem and it was them that we had to take it up with.

As we were messed about for so long the cooling off period had expired and they're wanting us to pay £X amount for them to come and uninstall it!

The box is still in our living room as we're definatley not paying that money when they were the ones that messed up!

No deals makes my decision all the easier. Boo to 30 days, but I'm certainly not surprised.

I am thinking of cancelling my Sky service which is Sky HD but I have only been with them since June/July. I am able to cancel as I am fed up with the service and hardly even watch TV now that the ex left. I could be doing with the extra £50 anyway :)

You'll get stung with minimum contract terms if you try that. I've been with Sky for close to 10 years so they're not getting me with that one.

Never had Sky - and can safely say - never will.

I'm amazed people pay £50 a month just to watch whats on TV & are satisfied with what they get for their money (a few extra channels showing adverts every 15mins and some sports). I could think of so much more to do with that £50 - but I suppose each to their own.

Read the terms properly and send recorded letters asking for written responses to backup any telephone convos.

My mate had a nightmare of a time with them when trying to cancel, 1 year on they are still demanding random payments despite everything being settled and in writing.

Even as a customer I have to agree with the 'waste of money' argument. I used to watch it a lot. Nowadays 99% of what I watch is on Freeview, though I'm milking Sky Movies for all it's worth this week before letting go.

I used to watch it loads - when Sky One was worth watching and I was addicted to WWF/WWE (including spending loads of money to get ringside seats at WrestleMania). I'd watch Bravo and Sci-Fi channels too. Since 'finding' these forums I've gradually lost interest in any TV I can't get from my PC (which means anything not on Freeview or online) - to the point that I haven't watched any of the above in 6-12 months.

I might re-subscribe next summer for the cricket season. I might not.

You have to give 30days notice so i dont understand why it would stop "the next day" as you pay in advance for the service.

when i cancelled mine, it was a months notice but because of some reason or other they gave me my last month for free so it worked out ok anyway.
They did phone a couple of times trying to get me to stay/come back but I just said it's not going to happen at the moment.

No offers from sky? I was moving house and ended up with a Sky HD box for £75 and an installation for £30.

I had to be put through to 2 departments when I cancelled. Both begging me to stay. One of the questions was Q "what was your most favourite channel" A "Anyone without adverts like BBC1 for example"

I got a HD freesat card for the PC money well spent.
