Server naming compition

We have a dev server and it was named slugbucket - I kid you not...
I was on leave or it would never have happened, but now it has cult status

S-xxx-yyy-zzz01

where xxx is the company name abbreviated to 3 letters, yyy is the office location in 3 letters, and zzz is the purpose:

S-PDG-LON-DC01 For domain controller 1 in the London office of paradigital.net UK

Anyone who names a computer/server/workstation in an office environment with a non-descriptive naming convention is a choad of utmost magnitude.

How about volcanoes?

My network is called magma,

Servers are named after volcanoes.

Ie Krakatoa
Vesuvius
Taupo
Colima

And so on.

Whats the prize :D

Thats at home btw, depending on the business size you should really give the server names that reflect what they do and such.

Cryten?

Smeg?

-----

Seriousy though...

We have ALPHA - MIKE for our citrix servers.

And HOTEL-DC, PAPA-DC, JULIET-DC and INDIA-DC for our domain controllers.

I named all of my hard disks and memory sticks after space shuttles, I have Atlantis, Discovery, Endeavour, I think naming them Challenger or Columbia might be a bad idea though.

We were just implementing a convention based on LOTR when I was made redundant.

I did name the new dev SQL Server Theoden before I left.

Whilst I can see where paradigm is coming from, if your network isn't that big (and ours wasn't) then I can't see the problem in following any naming convention of your choice.

My home machines are all named after WW2 fighters: Spitfire, Typhoon, Lightening and Komet. Think I'll be following this for a while :)

How about You******* (after the camel in Pyramids)

(Hint, it begins with 'b')

Or something suitably offensive that when asked what the name of the server is a reply will result in lots of abuse.

Or even "HEX", like the computer prone to spurting out such gibberish as seen below in my sig (Shamelessly robbed from Mr Pratchett)
