Learning to drive? Advice, ins and outs, costs etc..

Just wanting to know how much things will all cost roughly.

I know the prov. is £50, how much will a reasonable amount of lessons + test cost?

and do you need insurance just for taking lessons + test?

also how much would insurance cost on something like a '98/'99 1.8 mondeo/vectra? 3rd party or fully comp, for a 17 year old that is too.

also any other advice would be great.
 
No insurance is required, unless you're using your own car. You'll be covered under the instructors insurance.

My lessons were £20 an hour, I'd have usually have 2 hour lessons though, which were obviously £40. It took me ages to pass as I'd often not have any lessons for weeks at a time. All in about 5 months. So it cost a fair bit.

You can often get £10 or so off when you book in blocks, which might be worth a look at and iirc tests are around £65?
 
oh ok, not too bad then for the lessons, affordable anyway.

How come the insurance is so high for such an old car? presumably that figure was fully comp and because I'm 17?
 
That will be third part fire and theft i would have thought. I know mine for my clio is around that figure and that is 1.2 which is 11 years old. It is cause you are 17 it icosts so much
 
blimey, maybe I can't learn to drive so soon.

How much extra would it cost (aprox.) to go on my mums insurance with her X Reg, Matiz 800cc? (fully comp)

Well I was hoping to have my mum teach me most of it to save money on lessons, that's not going to happen though it seems.

That's wierd, hmmmm, I'll have to get some quotes, because I don't see the point in learning yet if I can't afford a car or anything. I'm still in full time education.
 
Chances are you'll be learning in a city car or super mini so a jump to something as big as a Mondeo could be quite hard as soon as you pass. I would stick with something like a small family hatch (Focus, Golf, Megane etc...) for a while until you get confident and improve space awareness. Plus smaller engines, cheaper insurance, tax, petrol and general running costs for a 17 year old.

@shifty_uk - My insurance stayed the same when I passed, didn't change a penny. Then when my next renewal came round and I did the usual confused.com business I found a quote about £100 cheaper. £150 cheaper than that this year.

Although it did go up with some of my friends, when your a learner you gonna be careful and have someone hopefully responsible with you in the car. When you pass you could (if you fancy) go street racing with 4 other young gentlemen in the car and end up being a spanner and hitting something very hard.
 
If it's still going to cost me a thousand or so on insurance, I can't really afford it still though, not until I get a job anyway, which I'm having difficulty with at the moment, partly due to time, partly due to lack of motivation to write up a CV :p
 
Only learn to drive if you've got the income to support it. It'll take a steady stream of lessons. Get a part time job, there's plenty going at this time of year!

Yeah, where I work part time we'll hire anybody right now who can speak some sort of English and isn't completly and utterly stupid.

Toys R Us, literally I watched in on an interview the other day (there group interviews) out of 8 people 1 was only remotely hire-able. 2 didn't say a word in the discussions, 2 clearly didn't any English, 1 was on bail for assault, 1 didn't turn up and the other had 3 weeks of December booked off on holiday (which if we're hiring a temp till 24th December is no good).

Well my mate who is very clever (got straight As and A*s in his GCSE's) got rejected for a job at the local toys r us because he wasn't chatty enough.
