Learning to drive? Advice, ins and outs, costs etc..

I'm not surprised he got rejected. If you're working at a retail shop you need to talk to customers... important you show you can do that.

Also, if he doesn't contribute in the interview, how do they know how good he would be in the workplace?

lol.

Well my mate who is very clever (got straight As and A*s in his GCSE's) got rejected for a job at the local toys r us because he wasn't chatty enough.

Straight A's isn't gonna help you sell toys ;)

They do tend to look for fun chatty people, it's a pretty relaxed environment and everybody needs to be quite talkative as it's pretty sales focused unless your a till girl or night shift monkey.

Your mate must be a ****.

lol, he is chatty, but I guess he isn't really a natural talker lol.

I'm not that chatty myself though around strangers.

The interview is pretty easy, you just gotta talk to the person next to you and get details off of them (name, favourite color etc) and then stand up and talk about that person. Then a 'hot' topic is susgested such as fox hunting, driving while using a phone, etc and you just need to discuss that. Then you've gotta write a simple letter to a customer who's complained and answer a few easy maths questions (if person A spends £9.99 and gives you £20 how much change do you give etc).

Pretty much it, an A* in PE or Textiles won't get you a job in sales!

It's all done through an application form, so no need to do a CV.

Most stores will be hiring staff right through till about mid December, with the best few from each section getting kept on as a perminant employee.

Awesome, links appears to be not working though. I'll do it tomorow I think, I'm going to bed now, school tomorow.

Thanks for the help and input :)

Night.

Lessons: I had about 40 at £20 a go, mainly because I had a 2 months wait between driving tests, and I had to take it 3 times

Insurance: At 19 a 1.8 mondeo was going to cost me £2200 on insurance

500 on lessons!!! 7-8 should lessons see you right. I cant understand how it takes people so many lessons to pass.

what ?

dont be so daft. If you've got no prior experience of driving whatsoever you will not become a safe driver in 8 hours.

Granted if you're family has got land that you've been speeding about on then yes you probably will as its just road sense you've got to learn

But you wont learn gears, clutch control, manoevres, positionning etc... in 8hours.

No offence or anything but Toys R Us is last place you want to be working, I got offered a job by them last year working on the entertainment section (computers, consoles, cameras etc) but the pay was awful.

They were only offering me £4.05 an hour which is just above minimum wage, I am now working at IKEA and earn £5.84 an hour and really enjoy my job.

Before working at my current job I worked for Argos who wernt too bad to work for at £4.92 an hour and time + half on Sundays but not a patch on IKEA.

The pay rate is different at every store, we find out what wages are like for other places near the store and it's based on that. Iirc the starting wage for an under 18 employee is £5.95 for the first 6 months then it's £6.35.

Everyone gets paid the same no matter what section you work on. I work on the multimedia section and it's a good place to work, it's a shame your TRU pays so badly.

when i was 18 i was really jealous of my mates who did table waiting

Yes the money is a bit pants, but they sure as hell made up for it with the tips. If you're willing to make an effort all night and smile and be polite you can rake it in.

Yant.

Dunno if this has been said but I believe after January you need to be 18 to learn to drive? Also you need to have a minimum amount of lessons which is 50.

So that's going to cost you a grand at least.

For insurance on your own car at 17 you'll likely be spending close to if not on £2000 on a small engined car, but on something like the 1.8s you'll be looking at over £2000.

As for being added to the Matiz, you'll have to ask your mum to phone her insurance and ask.

I'd strongly advise taking quite a few lessons prior to getting in the car with your mum, because with her you'll learn bad habits and won't learn important things.

Even if you have no car when you pass, getting a license as soon as you can is a good idea because it means it's there should you need it, plus as the years clock up on your license, your insurance will drop, even if you have no NCB.

while you may only be learning things for the first 8 or so of the lessons, you'll find most people cant afford to insure their own car to get some road hours in.. i know i personally paid an instructor just to sit in the car with me while i drove around a bit, get some confidence, and have the give me pointers on things i was lacking, rather than actually "teach" me to drive.

IfI got my provisional before that date would I still be able to get a full licesne at the age of 17?
