T-mobile G1 – The first of the Google Android Phones. A Review

Pictures look fine to me!

Hmm.. I don't listen to music a lot, but a couple of hours a day would be a deal maker/breaker. Can't decide between this and the iPhone. I'm a software engineer, so having the ability to write some of my own apps would be nice (without having to buy a Mac, as I would to use the iPhone SDK!)

you'd need linux to use the android sdk from what I understand, doesn't work under windows.

if you look at the link I posted for the bigger capacity battery, should solve the battery life issues :)

After hearing all of the bad news about the camera etc I'm a bit  with those... Really quite impressive!! It's no doubt down to the fact I've never used a good camera phone and so have low expectations but seriously... That level of quality would be fine for me!! Certainly good enough to take some shots in an emergency etc (Eg, involved in a car accident, etc)... Otherwise I don't think I'd use it much anyway!

The more I read about this phone the more sold I am... Battery life still worries me though. My Treo 650 is ages old and I can still get a good 3 - 4 days use out of it... Maybe more if I am careful. This may be down to the fact that I turn the phone side of it off at 11pm and back on at 7am...

Infact that reminds me; Is there any app for the G1 to make it turn on and off at set times? I used to always forget to turn the phone off at night before I got the Treo... And then moan if I was woken by a text message alert :p

As long as you have al network devices off then you will easily be able to use it to play music. Just I walk around with bluetooth and GPS on.

There's no app to turn it on of off at set times. Couldn't be one to turn it on as the app is not running :p

Got 1 pixel stuck on blue. Very annoying. Going to phone up tomorrow and get a replacement. Also I'm going to try and up my price plan and get the £50 back for the phone. Think I can do this? I want the online web offer though and I don't think they will allow me the double texts like I can get online? So might have to cancel and buy it again?

Oh noooooo :( Just as I was ready to bite the bullet too! Has it always been there but less noticable or just come on all of a sudden? That's a real shame... You seemed so happy with it - Though I s'pose all will be okay again when you get a replacement.

All you can do is phone and ask, I guess. What is the cooling off period? And has that elapsed? If it has I can only assume you'll be locked into contract now... Fingers crossed you sort it to your satisfaction. Any reason you're thinking of upgrading the tarrif? Made the wrong call initially?

Finally, acid test - If you do cancel and have to take out another contract... Same phone again? Or would you choose differently in hindsight?

Good luck :)

Always been there but then it went and now it's back. I blame the blue wallpaper that I have had on lol. It's no big deal. Stuck pixels happen, come to accept it. Just don't think I can put up with it on such a small device though.

Well I bought the phone last week and it came Saturday. So I must still be in the cooling off period I would have thought.

Upgrading because my current one gives me 200 minutes, 400 texts. Thats 7 minutes a day & 15 texts. Wouldn't mind a flext 30 option where I can have double the amount and choose how I use it. Some months I know I will be on the phone to women, other months will be texting mates. (Women come and go :p)

As for if I have to cancel to take out another contract will I stay with the phone.

HELL YEAH. I love this phone to bits. It sounds lame but it makes life away from my pc so much more fun. Geotagging images, maps, apps. I have been showing mates on webcam and they just love the stuff it can do. Fair enough the iPhone can do the same and some things it does better. But I love owning a device which no one has heard of and does some neat stuff.

I'm going to take some pics tomorrow and maybe a video as well to chuck on YouTube just so I can show people it's full potential.

Just did a complete u-turn away from the iPhone and ordered a white G1 on the £25 month deal, with £35 cashback (handset was £50). Hopefully be here tomorrow! :)

Wonderful - "Unfortunately, because of your credit status we are unable to offer you a pay monthly phone."

Looked at my credit file - October 2003, a late payment to T-Mobile (was coming to the end of the contract, they told me I could cancel the DD, turned out I hadn't paid my final bill, was paid within a few days).

So I now need to write to their Credit Referrals address (snail mail, wonderful). Wonder if it's even worth the bother, or if I should just get an iPhone?

(btw: I'm a homeowner, have a completely clean credit file except the aforementioned "late" payment)

jamief can't you just pop into your local t-mobile store and sort out the problem and get the phone? sure you miss out on the quidco cash back but you get the phone in hand.

Well I phoned Customer Services, and they said it was a case of computer says no basically. Don't really want them to do another credit search and turn round and say no again :(

I chose black as it won't be as obvious to my wife when I'm surfing the net on it. White is too visible!

I hate my Dad... lol

The lazy pixel has gone... which is annoying as I have a feeling it will come back.

As for upping my tariff. I'm on £20 a month. 200 minutes, 400 texts. I know I wont run out of texts as that's 15 a day. But minutes that's only 7 a day. Dad was trying to convince me that if I don't use 200 a month then what's the point in paying extra. The thing is I don't know how much I will use. So I have to try and figure out today.

So haven't rang them yet. Will let you know if I do.

tobes its 7 working for the cooling off period, so if you recieved the phone on saturday it starts from monday(so you have till this coming tuesday). you also have 7 calender days for the network gurantee if you used the street checker during checkout when you bought the phone.

Yeah I have sent them a webmail asking if it would be possible to up the price plan to the combi 25 and get my £50 back.

Battery is starting to get on my nerves now. I mean it hasn't died on me. But when the bar goes down so quick it's just a bit annoying. Last night at 12 I left the fully charged phone on with just bluetooth on. Woke up at 1pm (dont bitch lol) and it was down to less than 15% battery. So sitting there doing nothing in standby with bluetooth on it last 13 - 14 hours. Not good imo. Reading forums people have exchanged the phone and received one with a better battery life. Wonder if it's just a bad batch.
