Crackles, sparks and smoke, yet working fine?

So last night I was putting together a machine from some spares that I plan to sell on.

I moved my main monitor (22" V7 TFT) down to the new rig.

Not wanting to unplug the cables on my main machine, I got an grab a spare kettle lead from my box of random pc bits.

As I plug it in, there are a loads of fizzes and pops, plenty of sparks inside the vent of my monitor, and the lovely smell of burning solder and pcb.

I quickly turn the plug off, thinking I have fubarred my monitor, but when I plug in my normal kettle lead, it works fine. Not a single thing wrong with it, just it still smelt of pc smoke.

And ideas as to why something as dramatic and almost ALWAYS fatal to components seems to have had no adverse effects on my monitor?

I turn it off at the plug when it's not in use, so if it does plan to catch fire, I will see it happening.

Sucks though, I don't have any money to get a new 22" :(

Well, I got the monitor B-Grade last year from OCUK, and they have 3 year warranties, so I will get the serial and stuff, and contact VideoSeven regarding what happened, and see if the on-site warranty would cover it, and hopefully get it repaired or indeed a replacement sent to me.
