*** The Official Football Manager 2009 Thread ***

I haven't started playing yet, only purchased the game yesterday but been reading the TTF guide (some 18,000 words) on SI and trying to plan what I am going to do.

I usually start all my games with Lyon in France then after a season or 2 load up one with Spurs and play the two of them before heading off to the lower leagues once the game is sorted out (usually 2 patches in).

Seems some people are having some interesting seasons and it makes a change from having people using the big teams all the time (Arsenal, Man Utd, Barca) which you seem to get most of on the SI forum.

Anyone give me an insight on what to expect from Pavlyuchenko when I finally start my game? I usually try and build a tactic around a target man, and in real life he is good in the air and should fit this role well, so whilst sitting here I have him pencilled in for the job, just need clarification.

Pavly looks good stats wise, has 16's for most things, including most of his physical stats (16 pace, accel, stam, 14 strength i think). Would be ok as target man i reckon.

So far what i have gathered in 09 is this: Treat it like you would a real-life team. Take no risks unless you expect to compeltely dominate a game or are a team of legends. With tottenham, i would say do a standard 4-4-2. Bent is fast, play him off Pavly. Rest does itself. Don't try any fancy formations or go over the top with instructions, you will lose, no question. It needs to flow throughout the pitch, no gaps or weaknesses. It's madenning, but i'm slowly starting to crack it and i can actually see why i'm not winning many now, which is satisfying.

On that formation, I find that a clinical striker on the ST left side and having a tall striker to head down on the right. Such as I had Cisse on the left and Kenwyne Jones on the right and it worked a treat. Cisse has 8 goals in 4 games in pre-season.

I tried a carew/Agbonlahor partnership before, but they are physically good, but technically/mentally dire. Carew just doesn't feed agbonlahor whatsoever. Though he scored a hat-trick one euro game, they rarely challenge keeper, they shoot from range (i tell them not to) or just not at all. I'll try and get someone cheap in Jan. It's annoying,on paper i couldn't wish for a better partnership, but stats wise, they are appalling. Would own Championship though heh.

Football Manager ALWAYS has teams score in last 5 mins. For years it's been like that. Last game, Everton away. 2-0 up, dominating, they are 10 men. I up time wasting, turn off farrows. they still score 2 in last 10 mins lol.

I've only played one season so far, but I've seen much, much less of this kind of thing than in any Football Manager since '05. I am holding out hope that they have realised that they went a bit overboard with the last-ditch 4-2-4 that was very difficult to effectively stop, and toned it down a bit.

I'm just a bit miffed that it's taken me half a season to figure out how the new tactics really work, kinda wanna start again, but kinda cheating hehe.

I used to like buying great plyaers, whacing them in their natural positions and watch them own. Doesn't work like that now, you really gotta know them inside out. It's overtaking my life haha.

To be honest I restarted, I always like to test my team with tactics before I properly start to get to grips with the new tactics system and what works and what doesn't, just makes my life easier as I'm not great with tactics in general (too complex for me).

Aaargh!

I had a button on my mouse set to act as a Space button when I pressed it so I could continue the game. Now for some reason it opens the Windows Vista search pane. And I didn't change any settings in Vista. Tried resetting the settings but nothing works. :(

Hmm, i'm in two minds. I don't like playing in the prem tbh, you just can't really compete with the big 4 and every game is stupidly tough. But love playing as Villa, i need to connect with the team. Their squad always has a few star players and low expectations, with ok money too, perfect really.

But im in December now, last few games have been lost 2-1 chelsea at home, lost 2-0 man utd home, beat everton 2-1 away, lost 3-0 blackburn away, and think i beat spurs 1-0 at home. lost 4-1 away in q. final cup against liverpool too.

i'm 8th in league, but like 2 points off 4th. Very close league, top 3 are like 15 points clear though.

But thinking about it, camacho was a mistake, as reo-coker does same job, could save that £4m and get new striker.

You're talking 3-4 days of time down the drain though heh. How far were you in your game, and are you same team? Check out Shakhtar - Srna (one of best Right wingers in game i think), Willian (-10 prosepct), 40m to spend. Though, reputation is a bit pants, couldn't get people to sign.

I was about 3 days play time in before I restarted because I was doing naff due to bad tactics :) Was annoying to have to restart, and I kinda didn't want too, but this second time around with better tactics is making me enjoy the game much more.

Good point, probably winter time like me then, i found myself shouting at the monitor yesterday, was winning 1-0 against west brom, 80 mins at clock and i was saying "go on then, equalise, your going to, always happens" then bang, they did, i was "£*£%"^**"^""

Also, i haven't got the class of players to play 1 up front with 2 wingers, so i gotta change tactics again, which means another 5 games of crap results. Think you're right, im going to still get saivet and marcelo, but spend the camacho (it says he has potential to far exceed reo-coker) cash on new RB, i'm getting addicted now haha.

Was thinking about playing a lower league team, but i always see the transfers of the famous players and i'm like "by time im in big league, they retire, what a waste". I'd play as Shakhtar but...orange!! Best teams to play as are ones with enough reputation to get decent players, not in a strong league (unlike prem) and have a little bit of cash. Anderlecht were a favourite in 2007, Standard replace them now. I might look at other russian/ukrainian teams though, seems they have many billionaires.

Lol :p That is exactly what I do! 80-ish minutes on the cloak, and the replays kick in for their attempt and it's all like "sigh, go on then, score, you know you're going too" then they do and i'm like "OH **** OFF" then frantically mash the "X" button to close the game and go in a huff :p

Snap! I'm same :)

I think it's time i went for a foreign team again, Villa are on paper awesome, the team i support, 2 amazing CB's, good keeper, 2 great CM's, 1 amazing winger, but Prem is just too competitive, it doesn't matter what players you discover, you're up against unlimited powers.

So i'm shortlisting teams that aren't big, but have a solid spine of key players (at least one good CB, MC and ST), not poor and not in an impossibly tough leage. Belgium was best i've found for that so far, standard having best players, but i don't like red haha. So far:

Shakhtar: Dinamo Kiev main threat, rest aren't great. Srna, Willian, Fernandinho. £40m spending budget.
Sampdoria: Depends what expectations are, might try if they are mid-table. Poli, Fiorillo, palombo. Italians have crap budget though and tough at top.
German league none favourties: Shalke,etc.
Mexico league looks exciting.
Serie B teams with potential, two big teams being parma and brescia.

I don't want a team where i can never get top quality players in the future, it's a tough mix. Not too high expectations, not easy, but potential to be big.

Ugh, ok, first proper gripe about the new confidence system. End of first season, win League 1 by a 24-point margin (Leeds), start the Championship campaign, notice that board confidence in me has suddenly plummeted from 'very pleased' to to an uncomfortable 'satisfied'.

I go to the Confidence screen to check it out and see that the fans appear to be very unhappy with my signings. Eh? They were delighted with them a week ago, and rightfully so. I check the Signings sub-screen and see that for half of the players, the text now reads "the fans are disappointed that blah-de-blah has played so few games for the club". Wtf, they're prospects you retards, I mean the 17-year-old defender who I poached from Deportivo's youth setup for £1k was never going to go straight into the first team was he?

I could understand an implementation of this kind of fan reaction if it were tied it to the transfer fee, so that the supporters could get justly irritated by the manager spending a big chunk of the transfer budget on a player that then sat in the reserves, but having them get up in arms over a £5k sixteen year old not getting any first team run-outs is just silly.

Happened with my last game, where if you did well season before, they expect even better now. Also in this game yeh, my fans are also not happy with the signings of future world stars Camacho and Saivet for peanuts haha. I'm leaving English league, they suck :p

lol :)

I do hate the board confidence thing, going from "Superb" down to "Average" or something when you start a new season.

Does anyone know if there's a mirror for the 9.1 patch? (i.e. not Steam).

I click the link on the SI Download page and it returns a 404 error.
