What degree has the best job prospects, other than medical, engineering or IT. Do any Arts degrees offer good jobs? ... Im in a gap year bare in mind im not sure what to do. I got a DDM on my BTEC national dip. in Media: Moving image, but doing media at Uni is quite frankly a waste of time as most things covered in Uni are things ive covered in college. I was thinking of doing Electronic Engineering but could get tricky as i dont know much about physics, although i did get a B in maths GCSE :p. Suggestions welcome.

A degree in media is a waste of time anyway - It just has no real world use employment wise. Neither do social sciences generally - The only real thing to do with them is join a graduate scheme with a company.

Engineering at a good name uni means employment is easy to find (has to be a good uni or the courses won't be accredited by institutes, such as crap uni mech eng courses won't be IMECHE/IET acreddited, good ones will be).

I would say BA are usually the crapper degrees, but camebridge degrees are all BA's iirc, so look into that.

Accountancy pays well, so does banking (potentially). Don't worry about the state banks are in at the moment, they will sort themselves out in good time.

You have to do a degree you will enjoy, but remember the reason you are there is to get a better pad job, so remember that before signing up to criminology with sociology:)

Well to be honest you can get into a fair share of grad jobs with any course, what matters (awaits flaming) is the reputation of the university you go to, if you get a 2.1 or above and your Alevels. I'd say get into the best uni you can and start on a course you'd find interesting.

University is a means to an end. You need to decide what you want to do and then based on that, you will then know what is it is you will need to acheive at uni. Hell maybe you chosen profession may not even need a uni qualification. Otherwise where will your motivation and commitment come from?

I would advise against going to uni 'just becuase' or 'for the sake of it'

Another vote for Economics/Accounting. There's always Maths but doubt you'll find a decent uni that will take your BTEC to get in to a Maths course.

You have to be interested in those kinds of subjects though.

Accountancy - "The art of recording, classifying, and summarizing in a significant manner and in terms of money, transactions and events which are, in part at least, of financial character, and interpreting the results thereof."

Is that supposed to be fun? :p

Haha economics is a social science and the main route into banking... ;) not all social sciences are a total waste of time :D

also dont agree with BA at all...

Really you should try and do something you enjoy at the best name possible.. the guy who said it doesnt really matter what you study but where - there really is some truth in that!! good luck..

Do whatever you enjoy most. Don't waste your time doing something with "economic value" - if you don't enjoy doing the degree, why would you think you'd enjoy a job that requires it?

True.

If I had the money I would go and do a degree just for the fun of doing a degree in something I really loved - regardless of worth.

Yep, the chances are that if you pick something you enjoy then you'll be more likely to do well at it. I know for certain that having a genuine interest in computers and technology has helped me out with computer science. I know some people who pay attention to everything in lectures, read all of the notes but struggle with simple things like using the unix shell because they don't have the background interest. The main reason I am doing my degree is because I enjoy learning and it's a subject I enjoy.
