Right now I'm looking at the Sony KDL-46W4500. Read a little bit about it and it seems like a good set. I don't really know much about other models though, so if anyone can give me some sets to look at that would be much appreciated.

It will mostly be used for Sky+ (possibly getting HD box soon also) and DVDs/blu-ray. No gaming or anything.

Cheers

Go Plasma if its mainly for movies and Sky. You could maybe get a Pioneer for that price perhaps? Other guys here know a lot more than me on high spec TV's though :p

I heard plasma's are better for what they want, but the place they're buying from (not sure if I'm allowed to say here) doesn't have many choices. They only have Pioneer PDP-LX5090 and PDP-LX6090, which are both over my budget. I know Pioneer's are the best, so I wouldn't know what Panasonic's to look at either.

The Panasonic PX80 is amazing for SD and HD stuff even though its 720p. It just depends on what they are gonig to watch the most, if its a lot of SD content, then the PX80 could be better or if its a lot of HD then the PZ series would be better.

They are both well under £1500 though. The PX80 is more than half that at about £610.

They have the TH50PZ80B for £1300 which looks quite good, no PX models though. I'm a fan of Panasonic's because the 32" LCD I have in my room is brilliant. I'll have a look at the Sony and Panasonic tomorrow then.

Cheers

Shouldn't they wait till Monday to get lower VAT ?

On second thoughts they must be rich already spending £1500 on a telly:p

Haha not rich really. They've been saving ever since the bulb (rear projection TV :o) in our current TV died and had to be replaced. I forgot about the VAT thing, I'll tell them and see what they say.

Why do they have to buy from this place ?

The 5090 can be had for a bit over £2k and is well worth it over the panasonic vieras which can't get anywhere near it.

Don't get an LCD once setup at home it will look crap for normal tv comapred to an old CRT.

Also wait for the VAT drop !

Kuro. 42" £1300, 50" £1800

Shop doesn't sell Pioneer Kuro's. :(

My parents won't buy off the internet for some reason. They buy a lot of things off the internet, they just won't buy a TV. I don't think they'd want to spend over 2 grand either, but I'll tell them about the 5090.

i would do what nymins said, the pioneer yes it has a better picture but not nearly a grand worth no were near, you can buy 3 80pxs for the price of 1 of them and there isnt a lot in it

Right so it's definitely between the Panasonic 50" PZ80 plasma and Sony 46" W4500 LCD now, unless I can convince them to take a look at some of the smaller Pioneers. The Panasonic would be better for SD viewing (Sky + DVDs) correct?

I chose a PZ85 after looking long and hard at the Sony 40W4500 it just did not match the Panny for fast motion or black levels.

+1 for the PZ85B. I bought one about a month ago and love it. I thought I'd be compromising on SD quality but it's much better than my old Philips 32" CRT. Then HD via Blu-Ray blows me away. Can't wait for Sky HD to finally be installed. For the price Ithink it's hard to beat.

When parents are concerned I would always recommend a nice big panasonic plasma. Tell them to spend the money they have saved in not buying a Kuro on next years holiday.

Maybe it's just my parents but I really don't think they would appreciate the beauty of a Pioneer.

Firstly don't get the PZ85, overpriced and no improvements over the lower PZ80/81 in the picture quality.

I would disagree if they watch lots of tv, especially in a dark room, the Kuro whips the socks of the panny and shoves them up its HDMI ports. But your parents might not appreciate it.

Ideally spend more and get a 5090 to last many years, but if they can't stretch to this then a PZ81 should do nicely :D

How about one of the LED backlit Samsung's?

LE46A956

or the cheaper 786 which doesn't have the networking/DNLA features.

Nice blacks, lighter and lower power consumption than a Plasma if the interests them.

My mum hurt her leg yesterday when she was walking home from work, so she can't drive today. We're probably going tomorrow or monday now.

Thanks, I think the shop they're buying from has the 786, I'll have a look at it tomorrow.

The shop doesn't sell the PZ85 anyway. :p

I've told them about how good the Pioneers are, but they just think they're too expensive. Though the PDP-5080XD is around £1500, but I can't find anywhere that sells it in store.

Email in trust if anyone knows a shop that I can go to to buy the Pio. :p
