GeForce 9600GS 768MB opinions

The pc my parents have bought for my bro has that graphics card. How good is this card, will it play his 2 favourite games spore and left 4 dead?

9600GSO with 768mb memory???

It has similar preformance to the 8800gts 640mb as far as I can remember. It should do perfectly well in the two games mentioned (unless he has a 30" monitor or something )

What does the GS stand for, i thought it was ATI's equivelent to SE, meaning rubbish?

Well GS just indicates that it's a lower end card in the series. As I said it preforms similar to the 8800gts 640mb (the older version) which is OK by todays standards.

Preformance in the 8800 series goes something like this (best at top, worst at bottom).

8800 Ultra
8800 GTX
8800gts 512mb (based on the new G92 chip, much better than old G80 versions)
8800gt
8800gts 640mb/ 8800gs 768mb
8800gts 320mb/ 8800gs 384mb

Yeah, most of them have 384mb but there were a small amount released, mostly to OEMs, with 768mb.

Yup its roughly the performance of a 9600GT (slightly faster when heavy shaders are used and slightly slower when memory is a bottleneck).

If its anything like my old 8800GS it should overclock like hellfire as well.
