Will the current i7 motherboard support 32nm?

The LGA775 had different versions i.e x38, x48 etc with new memory and cpu support with each revision. Will this happen to x58 and will x68 be the next one supporting 32nm Westmere.

I've read Westmere has 2 x QPI whereas the current cpu's have 1 x QPI. Therefore there will have to be a northbridge update and it would not be possible just via a BIOS update.

sorry don't have a crystal ball. but 32nm is long time away, lots can change between now and then -> ddr4? new xpress 3.0 GPU? ....

Surely the X58 motherboards that are out now will have support for future Socket 1366 Processors? or are they built for the current Core i7 920/940/965 CPUs only and that's it?

It's not the socket that will need to support the new chips as such, it's the chipset.

775 has been around for a few years now, and the latest 775 chips certainly aren't compatible with all 775 chipsets, only the recent ones.

Well, going by the specs in your sig, you're not exactly in dire need of an upgrade right now anyway, surely? :P

That sucks, so you can spend £300 on a mobo now which wont be compatible with future 1366 processors... Yet another reason for me to hang on!

and also when Intel`s Sandy Bridge arrives in 2010, we`ll probably have to buy yet again another a new mobo, because it probably won`t be compatible with mobos that support Westmere :(

so this means, if buying a 1366 processors now, when Westmere arrives, supposed to be mid 2009, we`ll have to upgrade to a new mobo, and then when Sandy Bridge arrives, we`ll have to upgrade again.

It's a money making market...that's for sure.

I seriously doubt they'll be releasing a new motherboard for westmere. It doesn't make sense.

I mean why would they spend so much money on a platform that would only last half a year.

Because it is not a complete change, but rather an update so Intel's costs are not that high (or they possibly already have all the designs worked out).

But surely if they have all the designs worked out, they would have taken that into consideration when making the x58 chipset and motherboards.

Why?

As far as Intel and other board makers see it, they get better profits by selling us a board 2 or 3 times.

The x58 support the core i7 as well as the server variant. Can you imagine servers having to upgrade to another platform in a year's time?

Also look at the p35. It was introduced back in June 2007 and has support for the latest core 2 quads.

I was simply giving some reasoning should there need to be an update tot he boards, I did not say there has to be one.

Has anyone thought about contacting support services of a popular board maker company like Asus to ask them whether there current Socket 1366 X58 motherboards will support Westmere? or if the plane on releasing mobos early next year that will be Westmere ready compatible.

you know you've been doing this too long when you've seen this debate a few times..

truth is you can never tell and if you always wait for something that covers everything you'll only ever buy just before what you've bought becomes technically obsolete ie an X48 board will take any S775 cpu but it was released just before the new socket.

Just make the jump! Its a total waste of time trying to extract value for money from high end cutting edge pc equipment.

I think you'll find that most of the "ticks" and "tocks" from Intel will require a new motherboard - they *might* keep some kind of cross functionality but I think it'll be like AMD's, that is, with features missing.

They could get away with LGA775 for ages as the memory controller wasn't on-die at that point. Now it is, well, they have to revise the socket every time they make any kind of change. So if DDR3 goes quad-channel, new socket. DDR4? New socket.

It's a pity but it's just the way these things work.

According to wiki the x58 has support for 32nm and westmere will still be triple channel ddr3 etc so I don't see why they's need a new motherboard.

but if u think about it, its a good money maker for board companys to sell us current bloomfield boards then tease us with westmere later on. but if confirmed that current x58 boards will support westmere, im jumpin on the nehalem bandwagon after the january prices come down.
