Hey,

I'm looking to make the most of my final free summer before I retire and want to do a bit of travelling in Europe. With a £2,000 budget (not including travel) where would you recommend I go to?

I was thinking of spending three weeks travelling around the major cities. I'm going to guess at £40 a night accommodation x 20 days = £800. That leaves me with about £1,200 for food and general touristy stuff.

Thanks :)

Where have you thought about going? What do you like doing?

Do you like walking around, enjoying the sites? Going into museums etc?

I've been to a few cities, not many though...The ones I've been to are:

Berlin, Amsterdam (it is nice, regardless of the smoking / hookers), Hamburg, and recently went to Barcelona which was nice too.

If your interested in looking into the war a bit more, Berlin is good, due to the monuments and various museums and Check point Charlie etc.

Theres also places like Rome etc.

All depends on what you might enjoy :)

Mainly want to pick say, 5 cities and spend 3 days in each with a day of travelling, totalling 21 days. I'd love to do:

Barcelona or Madrid and do a bit of diving while I was there (money allowing)
Paris
Amsterdam
Berlin
Maybe Rome. I've already been to Venice twice but wouldn't mind seeing the capital.

The things I'd do would be the museums, the usual tourist sights as well as trying to include a few different bits. E.g. when I went to Oz I skydived and when I went to NZ I done pretty much everything else lol.

I do enjoy the odd bit of extreme sports and more interactive activities but the money is the major limiting factor.

Australia :)

/facepalm

Been there, done that, don't have enough money to do it again :p I do really want to go to the Great Barrier Reaf but it'll have to wait until Winter 2010.

A good killer round trip for you:

Berlin, Krakow, Prague, Vienna, Florence, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris and Amsterdam.

That could be too many so, () = days:

Berlin (2), Prague (2), Vienna (2) , Rome (3), Madrid (2) , Paris (3) and Amsterdam (2).

You could have course do something slightly different, see a country. How about Italy, it has the perfect tourist agenda:

Milan (2) Venice (3) , Florence (3), Rome (5), Naples (2) and Palermo (2).

All within easy traveling distance of each other.

Have fun :)

Barcelona was nice when I went, even if the weather wasen't amazing.

There is a fair amount to see as well, especially if you go on the tour buses (The one we went on had three different routes all around the city)

Then you can just generally walk around and see nice buildings and the like. Go visit the tower which Gaudi helped with, and the garden that some of his work is in as well.

Theres all sorts there really, I could go back quite easily, same with Berlin, just when it's not snowing this time :p

Screw western europe, Im guessing since you are retiring you have experienced the cold war - did you ever wonder what it was like in these countries and what its like now? Most of them still transforming, your money will go a long way there and there are so so many friendly locals eager to show off their unique cultures. You can dabble in everything from shooting, visiting great palaces and castles, grand soviet monuments, great scenery just outside big cities also good local food and drink.

When I read last free summer - I thought that meant being a student finishing studies...

This man is right

I'll be working full time from August 09 so I wanted to go out in a bang. Next real summer off will be when I retire. Lame joke :p

This sounds awesome. I'm going to check a few sites to get any idea of what to do in the different places listed. Thank god for cheap train tickets and airlines. Now just for cheap accommodation!

I went 2 years ago now.

My order was..

Amstersdam -> Berlin -> Prague -> Munich -> Venice -> Milan -> Nice -> Barcelona.

Wish we had of gone to Poland but didn't, which is annoying now i look back. I would suggest not going to Italy, just my personal taste i think though, but if you have enver been then try it. I suppose i did go with a mate so it wasn't really our thing lol.

Have fun, 2,000 is a LOT, should give you a very good trip.

Munich is a 100% must imo though, it was FANTASTIC, so much their, so much history in one place. Just amazing and nice.
