The E8400 will overclock well, giving you a pretty impressive gaming machine for the money.

The 4870 will handle high resolutions well, 1920*1200 will be no problem with any game.

yes similar to my system i specked him

system 2 just same but swop the cpu 8400 for a q6600. which comes to 811.00 .

I'd go with ro55o's spec m8,

1. I personally think the motherboard is better.

2. The PSU is better to power the 4870

3. For gaming you don't really need the sound card you have put on m8,The onboard would be fine :)

4. If you going to use 4GB of ram,Then i'd recommend Vista 64bit,As 32Bit OS won't recognise 4GB of Ram,And only supports 3GB of memory.

For an extra £20, why not get the 1024mb Powercolor?

Why a soundcard? Onboard not good enough?

ro55o spec is the best tbh.
Agreed that you don't need a sound card. Why spend the money on a sound card and loose out on a cheaper component somewhere else?....soundcard can always be added later.
For the extra £20 the 1024mb Powercolor would be best :D

its a gaming machine which i dont think hell overclock hell just want to set up and play.

added the sound card so he has an all round good package.

how much difference in performance beween the 512 4870 and the 1gb is it much?

how is the 520 corsair better than the 650 corsair i picked ? (he might go q6600 route)

As i said, don't spend money on a soundcard now, rather put it towards the full tower. You can always add one later. Onboard is decent.

Q6600 is a bit of an old chip now...for gaming it is recommended you stay with a high clocked dual core, especially if he can't be fussed with overclocking the Q6600.

If he can't be fussed at changing two BIOS settings (& overclock) then yes, go high clocked dual... :)

If he wants those extra cores, and to save some money, get the Q6600?

NOTE: On L4D, while monitoring my Q6600, all the cores are being used a lot. So I suspect we're starting to see software/games making use of multi-cores properly.

I noticed a huge difference going from the supreme FX on my old Maximus formula to a Asus Xonar DX, both in games and just listening to music

My (onboard) sound seems fine to me... Certainly more than good enough. Only issue I have is the mic volume could ideally be a bit louder.

settings/ mic boost - job done

Tried this, just resulting in too much noise.

I installed the proper drivers (RealTek), and that seems to have helped a bit. It's OK now, but I have the mic level set to full to achieve this. I'd prefer a bit of room to play with (ie: currently have it at 75%).

maybe your mic is not very good? i have pc350 seinheisser and people tell me it sounds great on vent ;) only partially boosted on mic

Possibly, but on my previous system with an Audigy 2 soundcard, the (same) mic volume was never an issue. I suspect, the mic pre-amp on the audigy is better than my current onboard chip.
