Games cliches that really annoy you

You can shoot someone for x damage, or you can punch / knife / hit them with your rifle for anywhere between x and 10x damage

Grrrrrrrr

"This game has been poorly coded"

In some of the more blatant, poorly optimised console ports, yes I would agree, but the term above is used way too much, by people who usually have no idea what it takes to design and develop a modern 3D game.

"Poorly coded" is a way of people who arn't as techy as you to explain the pap performance of a said game, where there is no obvious tangible other way to explain it.

Don't actually annoy me but I'm puzzled by people who seem to hate WoW with passion for some reason. Maybe they are all just being ironic or something I don't know.

Same for those that think wow the best thing mankind ever did. Gamers who say its all about gameplay not graphics I find annoying, complete BS and talking out of their rear end.

I'd also go with the majority of the public who think gamers are all spotty 16 years old virgins with a crush on Beyonce, and the intelligence of a slug, but having said that play online and you'd be inclined to agree. :p

Any game glitch that stops you from progressing has to be the worst.

it says cliches not glitches :D

Things Fallout 3 has in common with Obilvion:

They both have open sandbox 'go anywhere' gameplay. They are both first person. They are both RPGs. Thats it.

they are both made by the same developer...

I don't like this ridiculous new trend of games with regenerating health. Healthbars back please.
left for dead?

I think air vents and sewers have had there day
no left for dead for you then

I don't think that is really the case anymore - gaming has become much more socially acceptable in recent years. People openly talk about it at work nowadays and that didn't really happen much 5+ years ago except amongst select groups.

they are both made by the same developer...

Also by the same developer:
AMF Bowling 2004. Oblivion with bowling balls?
IHRA Drag Professional Racing 2005. Oblivion with drag racers?
High Rollers Casino. Oblivion with gambling?

So far in the 'Fallout/Oblivion with guns' debate, we have:

FOR
-first person
-Sandbox free roaming questing
-same developers

AGAINST
-different settings
-different graphical style
-different character stats and abilities system
-different levelling mechanic
-different combat system
-different inventory and quest log system
-different party system
-different travel system
-different 'tone of voice' (more humourous and tongue in cheek that the seriousness of Oblivion)
-Obviously, completely different quests and storyline
It has a similar gameplay dynamic, granted, but if you are going to call it 'Oblivion with guns' then you may as well call any other FPS 'Half life with <insert random feature>'. COD4? Half life with tanks. Far Cry 2? Half life in Africa. STALKER? Half life with radiation mutants. etc.

Ahem. Anyway, another annoying game cliche...and I appreciate this one may be personal to me only and will probably annoy a few people here, but i don't like it when gamers say things like 'pro-gaming is a legitimate sport, they should show it on mainstream TV', as, IMO, i find watching other people play games excruiciatingly boring, especially when they are just driving round a track or deathmatching each other. Fine if you really enjoy the game and are interested in seeing skilled players, but lets not kid ourselves that the average joe would have more than 5 seconds of interest in watching a pro CSS match.

Also, 'gaming improves hand/eye co-ordination'....does it really? REALLY? how can you tell, and what practical use would this have anyway? That was always one of the rubbish comebacks used a lot in the 90s when parents would tell their kids that playing games all day was bad for them. 'Yeh but it improves hand eye co-ordination'. Ok.

At my work if you said you stayed up 5 hours in the night playing COD5 they'd look at you like a lepper. None of my family quite get why a guy in his mid 30's wants to sit and play a computer game. Then by the same token they sit glued to Strictly Come Dancing.

Continuing on from glass walls...

Those stupid objects in the game world might look like a boulder, but it's just a transparent texture and when you jump around the model it's actually a pure square. God I hate that.

Flipping subways. I mean how many times do I need to trawl through a sodding sewer to save the world or myself?! I thought I had seen the end of them but then comes Left Four Dead.

LOL

Some of the best games I've played and still play have pants graphics.
I still play Q3 and it's variants online, and there's still a massive community. I still play tetris4, and other SNES games. Pretty much every indie game I've bought in the past year has been ****ing fantastic, but they just don't have the budget to use the Unreal Engine 3. It's *all* about gameplay - graphics are just icing on a tasty cake - and I have a 4870.

Don't they use the same game engine? I thought that was one of the reasons Fallout 3 has been labelled Oblivion with guns.

You can only be good at a game if you're a hardcore geek and you're bad at a game because you're a casual.

LOL

Seconded, counter-strike 1.6 still has a huge following and you could make a similar case with WoW.
