Cristiano Ronaldo has been crowned European Footballer of the Year by France Football magazine.

Ronaldo won the prestigious Ballon d'Or trophy after scoring 42 goals as Manchester United won the Champions League and Premier League last season.

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was second and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres was third.

Hardly a suprise. Not sure how Messi managed 2nd though, considering he spent long spells out injured throughout the year/season.

Torres has also been injured recently, and isn't this player of the year rather than season?

Who know's? They alway say it's for the year but they usually end up only reflecting on the season. That's why i put year/season.

As for Torres; he's only picked up the odd niggle here or there, iinm Messi was out for quite a while.

Edit: Torres also had the success with Spain which usually makes a huge difference in these awards.

I'm not sure how it works for the Ballon d'Or award but for the FIFA World Player of the Year the votes are all cast by April I believe. Really it is a player of the season competition rather than the entire year. On that basis, Ronaldo deserves this award.

Not that surprising really

Just wonder how the other 19 Journo's etc voted for first

Ronny was

Golden boot in EPL
Golden boot in CL
Golden boot in Europe (over all comps I believe)
CL Winner
EPL Winner

and without a doubt been a massive help in most games towards those team targets

Even considering Torres won Euros and highest debut season scorer, with a fabulous total of 24 - it surely still doesnt come close to the above list

Worthy winner, but I dont think he will even come close this season - whether he isnt completely happy - the ankle injury is affecting him still after the surgery or a combination of things, he is becoming more tiresome

France Football journalist on SSN now saying that it's more of a world POTY than just a European POTY as they take votes from journalists from all countries that have played in the World Cup.

Wow Fabregas is very, very low. He had an awesome Euro 2008 and was amazing for Arsenal last season, what the hell?!

The list shows how much influence the international tournaments have. Senna had a great Euro 2008 but nowhere near as good a normal season as most of the people below him on that list. I think its really unfair that John Terry and Rio Ferdinand weren't on the list.

hate to say it but the git deserved it, anyone scoring over forty goals in the season has to be doing something right, however if it was awarded on 'class/conduct' he would surely be bottom...

I agree with that. The figures don't lie and he had one hell of a season last year. May it NOT continue :p

I wish there was a an element of class and conduct on there, sorry but that's a big part of being the best player esp with it being such a public job if that makes any sense.

How Adebayor is above Cesc makes me frown over the final table. Also add in that Adebayor didn't play in the AcON last year!

Good to see Senna in there as well, he's a proper DM and it's nice to see a donkey working man get some reward.

Messi played 40 games last year. Ronaldo played 49

Fair enough. Messi was out for a couple of months around February-March time, clearly didn't miss that many games though.
