Initially I have to admit I followed Mr Scuzi's link and it did, indeed, rock the very core of my being.
After having done some research, however, I'm not so convinced, and am leaning towards the conclusion that what Scuzi's linked to is just one
arrangement of the theme without vocals.
Exhibit A, taken directly - it would seem - from the series opening titles:
It's lower quality, sure, but listen carefully.
Exhibit B: Hefti himself is quoted as jokingly saying that his composer's credit should read, "Word and Music by Neal Hefti." [source:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/14/AR2008101403357.html].
Why would the composer acknowledge that there was a 'lyric' if there were no vocals?
So as much as I'd like to believe that it was purely instrumental and that generations of children were hoodwinked by some clever instrumentation, I'm far from sure now that this was the case
It's made for a great talking point in the office today however; all the thirtysomethings were, like me, throwing full-on OMGfits.
