Hi, my friend recently purchased a second hand ford focus which comes with a very crap stereo system (no cd player just cassette and radio) and I would like to purchase him a new one for Christmas.

However, after a bit of research it seems ford do not use the standard cd player interface (it is almost twice the size (in height) so I am a bit stumped.

I think I need to buy some sort of adapter kit but am unsure on what I need to buy. I know he has steering wheel controls for his current stereo system which ideally I would like to preserve so it works with the new stereo.

Does anyone know how to do this and ideally on the cheap say sub £100 ?

Is it a new ford or an older one? (1998 on til 2007)

If it is, you will need:

Facia adaptor - £14.49
Wiring adaptor - £9.49

To keep the steering wheel controls, you need to tell us which head unit you are getting him. Does your budget include the head unit too?

Wiring harness adapter (to allow you to connect an ISO standard stereo to the Ford wiring loom) from autoleads for the Focus will be the PC2-08-4, can be picked up cheaply. Get a facia adapter (£10-15) and an aerial adapter and you are good to go. Halfords will stock all of these items off the shelf, though you can buy them for less if you're willing to shop around...

Steering wheel controls are a bit trickier, firstly you need a compatible stereo and not all of the budget models are. The necessary patch lead and adapter cables to connect the cars wiring to the new stereo can be pricey too...up to £35 or so. Typically there are 2 cables - a car specific one with the control box or 'brain', and a patch lead which is specific to the particular brand of stereo that you chose.

£100 for a new decent stereo, all the relavent leads/adapter bits to fit it into a Focus *AND* get the steering wheel controls to work with the new unit is pushing is - Best bet in my view is to up your budget, or forget about the steering wheel controls for now - if you can buy a compatible unit now you can always get the cables and connect it up later.

I believe it is an older one, he paid £1500 for it a few months second hand. I think it falls in the 1998-2005 bracket.

I have seen this on ebay (i believe ebay links are ok since overclockers dont sell car cd players... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-FOCUS-MP...14&_trkparms=72:1301|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318

which for an extra £35 they will supply a kit to for the steering wheel controls.
Does this look reasonable?

Judging from your posts i think this would be. I didnt realise it would be so exspensive but, he has been a good friend lately so dont mind paying that much
