Hi, I just installed linux mint and I love it!
Just changed from ubuntu as it was driving me crazy as I encountered so many bugs. Linux mint starts up in about two thirds of the time and Everything is silky smooth! I love how user friendly it is and everything just works!
Im using a lenovo laptop. On ubuntu I couldnt get 3d support to work but on linux mint it just works strangely!
I have finally found an OS I think I will stick with! I still have vista but I only use it about 4% of the time, and when i do it just gets on my nerves.

(here comes the thanks for the info jesus picture)
(oh wait its not GD :p)

it's a nice os isn't it :)

i'm a huge linux newbie, but have tried about 20 different distros

linux mint really impressed me

It is really nice! The default theme is great, and it comes with lots of useful stuff like DVD support which doesn't come in Ubuntu.

I was recommended it by someone on here. I have only used Ubuntu, Eeepc Xandros, and Xubuntu before. (And XP and Vista and Mac Leopard thingy)

out of that my preference was:

Linux mint > Ubuntu > Vista > XP > Xubuntu (nothing worked) > Leopard > Eeepc Xandros

I use mint on all my PC's, I prefer it because you can just install it and you have a totally working system with codecs java and flash working in all.
I recommend it to everyone.
And as its based off ubuntu if you ever have a problem just google the ubuntu solution to it :)

I really like mint as well.

Everything is already in the ubuntu repo's. I got Arch installed last month, I was really pleased with myself. I had 3d graphics, sound etc etc all working but the support forum and the repositries simply do not compare to ubuntu/suse.

I am testing opensuse 11.1 before I look at Mint 6, waiting for x64 support. When is Mint 6 x86_64 out?

I am a serial distro hopper but Mint is the one I always go crawling back to, that and maybe Mepis. It really is how Ubuntu should be and, despite what the 'leet' users say, I see it and other distros like it as the future if they are to challange for more market share. In fact I loved it so much I bought the company; well, I donated to the project. ;)

Can someone explain to me what the point of Mint is? Beyond looking pretty and not having to issue a few commands or use synaptic to find codecs and drivers what else does it offer?

Choice simply for the sake of choice? I really don't get Mint. And I've tried.

I understand your point of view. To an extend I agree with you. All I can remember when I started toying with linux was the difficulty in getting codecs working.

I started "toying" when ubuntu 7.04 and Suse 10.0 were released, so im still new. I remember it taking me hours to understand even what the terminal was. back on 7.04, you had to trawl through forums copy-paste commands into terminal to get codecs. Mint, its already installed! They have also added a couple of nice minty prgrams.

I get what your saying, with ubuntu 8.10, codec install is easy. you click "yes" when it asks in totem if you wanna install video codecs lol.

I have another question for you Atrox Moris. Whats the point of Arch/Gentoo beefy distro's. They take hours upon hours to install for no speed increase (I couldnt tell any speed difference between them and ubuntu), there repo's didn't include all the programs I use, unlike ubuntu's which includes mediatomb and sabnzbd.

anyway im rambling poo :p

Linux Mint website states;

It's one of the most community driven distributions. You could literally post an idea in the forums today and see it implemented the week after in the "current" release. Of course this has pros and cons and compared to distributions with roadmaps, feature boards and fixed release cycles we miss a lot of structure and potentially a lot of quality, but it allows us to react quickly, implement more innovations and make the whole experience for us and for the users extremely exciting.

Two words. Ubuntu brainstorm.

It is a Debian-based distribution and as such it is very solid and it comes with one of the greatest package managers.

Just like Ubuntu.

It is compatible with and uses Ubuntu repositories. This gives Linux Mint users access to a huge collection of packages and software.

So why choose it over Ubuntu?

It comes with a lot of desktop improvements which make it easier for the user to do common things.

Such as? Does anyone have a list of them? I know they have like a Mint installer and such, but what else?

There is a strong focus on making things work out of the box (WiFi cards drivers in the file system, multimedia support, screen resolution, etc)

And this isn't the case with Ubuntu? And if you can't work out how to install codecs from a restricted repository on Ubuntu, maybe Linux isn't for you.

I've tried to understand why Linux Mint is a good thing and I should switch from Ubuntu. And I can't.

Arch/Gentoo/Crux are great learning tools for people who want to build systems from nothing. Personally I use Windows on an eee box and Ubuntu on a laptop.

yeh I have to agree there by installing and config'in gentoo/arch it has increased my knowledge of how linux works 10 fold. Boy did it take alo0t of reading though, and took 2 weekends away from me :)

Now I'm back to playing with ubuntu/opensuse and mint lol

Same here. I use Ubuntu simply because everything works on my laptop with it. The only reason I haven't put Ubuntu on this eee box yet is because of the Ralink wireless card and I don't want to have to use ndiswrapper to get wireless functioning. I would swap it for another card, but I can't find a minipci card with an Atheros chipset that supports 802.11n.

Whats wrong with using ndiswrapper? It works fine on my pc at home.

I just hate using it. It works great, but I'd rather have a free open source alternative made by the community or by Ralink themselves. Hell, they could even go the way of Atheros and hire the community (madwifi authors) to take care of their wireless driver.

Not sure if the EeeBox uses the same wireless card as my 901 (although it wouldn't surprise me, pretty much all the hardware is the same for both!) but if it is have a look here and download the suitable custom kernel. Made getting Ubuntu fully functional on my Eee an absolute breeze!
