Fitting an exhaust, difficult?

Hello all,

Right, time for an exhaust for the Zed. I've been looking around on the zs forums etc and people either go for a piper or a Janspeed, the latter being the better/best.

Going to order a catback system this week or early next, along with a decat, how hard is it to fit an exhaust? or am I better off taking it somewhere?

For the price of getting it fitted its simply not worth getting your hands dirty, depends on the car but it can be a total pain in the bottom without all the car in the air.

How would you raise it? Will be a pita if you are just plonking it on axle stands and doing it laying down

Got a pit at the yard, so it's dead easy to get under the car

How much am I likely to be charged to get it fitted?

i fitted my own one on my old car, bought new bolts, angle grinded the old ones off, and whacked the new exhaust on (midsection and backbox)

took about an hour total and this was on axle stands. Fairly simple job really.

How much you paying for the exhaust?

Around £50 based on the fact the garage charged me £20 to fit a twin exit backbox to the mazda.

We've fitted an exhaust twice on a BMW on the drive and whilst it didn't take ages its a dirty job to get things slackened off etc.

Catback is £300 and decat is £90.

Not a bad price on the catback, that a full SS system?

I was going to say get one custom made since you can get this done and fitted for £400.

never heard a Janspeed but Pipers are very loud and drown out almost all noise on the motorway.

I have a decat and Piper cat back and it pops and bangs at low speeds etc, hell it even spits fire when its running rich (cold).

Decat will be annoying come MOT time though wont it? (i still got a year yet, but i cant stand this noise anymore so it will be gone soon lol)

Shouldn't be an issue. If I was going to fit it I would put flanges on so I could hot swap it out for the original cat. I know a decent MG place that can fit the exhaust with the flanges on the decat section, shall give em a ring tomorrow.

I fitted my exhaust in the rain and cold using a single jack, it took about a hour and a few skinned knuckles.

that was my plan too, but it never happend. Kinda glad really as it would have cost more and this aint staying.

It'd be a piece of **** to change the exhaust with the car over a pit/ramps.

Big bar, some heat and you're sorted.

If MOT's aren't an issue I'd forget the de-cat pipe and get a custom exhaust made to fit straight upto the manifold. It won't be much more expensive, probably easier to fit too (less joins/bolts).

Under what circumstances would MOT's not be an issue on any of the MG Rover's? :confused:

Under the circumstance where I read the OP stating MOT's aren't an issue?

I've known many cars to fly through an MOT with no cat.

I meant with the issue that if the emissions are too high it's not an issue.

Tried to fit an exhuast (from cat backwards) once using only ramps and was a pain. The car was 6years old with only 22k miles, and despite being spotless underneath, certain bolts had rusted together and/or just snapped off when we tried to undo them.

I hate to think what a 10year old citroen is like underneath!
