As the festive season is approaching :) My wife is asking me what i would like for chrimbo, Im thinking a new 22' 23' or 24' my budget is a max of 250 but dont nesscarily want to spend all of that.

Pre requisites are
True HD 1920 by 1200
PS3 compatible
Onsite swappable warranty

My choices

Samsung SM-2443BW 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black

Dell S2309W 23" Widescreen True HD LCD Monitor - Black

Viewsonic VX2260wm 22" Widescreen True HD LCD Monitor - Glossy Black

2 questions that spring to mind, I will be buying a PS3 in the near future, As i haven't purchased a 1080p television yet i want a monitor to plug the PS3 into and check it out in HD. Do i need a HDMI port for this? The monitor's i have chosen only 1 of them has a HDMI port(Viewsonic 22') it meets all the pre requisites but i think the stand does look a bit flimsy

Finally the contrast to ratio question, having researched what contrast ratio is im figuring the higher the number the better, IE: 20000:1 will be beter then 1000:1 Am i right in thinking the contrast ratio is how black a black is and how white a white is along a scale. Would i really notice a difference between 20000:1 to 1000:1

Any help appreciated.

The S2309W can do 1080p don't worry, look at the specs. All you need is DVI, it's the same as HDMI but with no audio and trust me monitor audio sucks. Hook that PS3 upto some real speakers or at least half decent.

I ment the Op stated

The Samsung is the only one that can do 1920 x 1200

I too am looking for a new monitor to replace my aging Dell

I dont really understand the growing number of 1920 x 1080 displays i cant even decide on a res let alone a monitor

Cheers for the reply peeps,

I can see from EBAY that you can buy HDMI to DVI so this is not a issue really. That whittles it down a bit.

Basically i want to get the best panel/TFT for the money i have availble.

I would get the samsung because:

It DOES do 1920 x 1200 (which is greater than "True HD") and greater than the other 2 resolutions.

It has a contrast of 20,000:1 (Dell does 1000:1 and view sonic also 20,000:1)

But samsung has a bigger screen than the view sonic, and a higher rez mentioned above so I'd take the samsung.

(They all have to same brightness ration 300 cd/m2)
