new build woes (SOLVED) thanks

Ive just build my first rig and i think ive connected everything correctly. but when i try to turn the pc on. nothing happens no fans spinning, nothing. even fans connected directly to the psu dont spin.

my specs here
Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4850 "Golden Sample" 512MB
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM
Gigabyte GA-MA790X-DS4 AMD 790X (Socket AM2) Motherboard
Corsair TX 650W ATX2.2 SLi Compliant PSU
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000 3.10GHz (Socket AM2)
Antec 900 Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black (No PSU
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM

ive connected the 24pin connector and 8pin to the mobo. and other power connectors to the fans and disk drives. ive probably made a newbie mistake but i cant see where.

ill probably be recconecting everything tomorrow night to see if that helps.

All i can suggest at this moment in time is re-check every wire and make sure they are in the correct place i.e the power switch and reset switch.

have you connected the power button to the correct motherboard pins? Is the PSU swithed on at the wall and on the PSU?
 
Checked the fuse in the kettle plug?
Put the little spacers between the chasis and the mobo?

Some motherboards normally have a little green light on to show power is being received even if the system is off? anything?

Sounds like a PSU/kettle lead problem.
 
Ive tried two different kettle plugs and no change.
and ive connected the power button to the mobo, ill double check ive done this right tonight.
and ive installed the spacers.

edit one time when i tried turning it on last night one of the blue led's on one of the fans lit up. so im thinking i may have just plugged something in wrong or forgot to.

I recently had the same problem, particularly as you mention that you get occasional glimmers of power on your motherboard (lights illuminating sometimes and not others). In the end I just put in a different PSU and it solved all my problems.

I long, long time ago I had a similar problem which was caused by static build-up, the solution was to just leave it a while for the static to dissipate and then it worked. Can take a few hours though. I'm not sure how likely this is to be your problem though.

Looking over your specs I'm wondering how compatible your RAM is with that motherboard. I've heard that those gigabyte boards have some compatibilities with certain 1066 DDR2 ram, there should be a list of supported memory for that board somewhere. It's not going to be the source of your immediate problem, but worth looking into.

I'm at college atm so if static had built up it would has dissipated by the time id got home. ill try and tighten the screws when i get home then try it again.
 
just an update, tested the psu, it isnt faulty, reconnected everything and it booted, got a blue screen error took out 2 sticks of ram and its currently installing vista, thanks for all your help guys

thanks for putting up with all my newbie questions and misstakes :)
