GTA IV and Graphics Card Memory

Well just received GTA IV this morning and finally got installation completed (must have taken at least an hour in between signing up to Rockstar Social Club, Windows Live, installing files, entering serial, online activation etc.)

Fired up only to see blank screen with it defaulting to a vsync that my monitor did not support. Not sure what it was, but used the safe mode from the start menu to finally get in. Went to change the graphics options only to find I could barely ramp up anything before the included graphics card memory usage indicator went over the 320MB my 8800 GTS has. It wouldn't even accept medium texture quality!

So, definitely time for an upgrade...

I'm thinking of a 4870 - the big question is 512MB or 1GB. I would be very interested to hear what settings can be reached before the 512MB is filled?

I have a 4870 and quad core and 8GB ram so I will let you know tomorrow how it runs!

LIES!

you might be better off with the gtx280, apparently it's not working well with ATI cards...

It's all just a ploy to sell GFX cards if you ask me ;)

If your just updating your GPU for this game, then I would also suggest you go for an Nvidia card. Seems like Ati cards are at a loss for GTA, which seems about right as I have got an 4870. :(

Every card appears to be at a loss not just ATI. I wouldn't believe some of the fanboi warz on other forums.....
