Going there for the new year - can anyone suggest a cheap place to stay in Dublin and also whether I should consider another city altogether that will be cheaper?

Cheers

Do NOT stay in the Travelodge in Castleknock!!! Its miles out of town on the bus, you have to play chicken with oncoming traffic on a dual carriageway to get back to your hotel and the final straw is having to listen to kids doing god knows what in the car park ALL night!! :(

We stayed in a travle inn at the top of oconnell street which was nice enough, dont get sucked into the temple bar area as everything is such a ripoff.

Are we on about the same Dublin, or is this some small village in Switzerland maybe?

Last 3 times I went there, it was dirty, overpriced, full of druggies / load mouthed kids with attitudes - and the Irish hospitality had long since left (due to everyone employing eastern europeans who didn't understand much). Much like most of the run-down areas in UK cities now.

There's also very little to see or visit & it's definately not child-friendly or easy to drive around. Maybe I just spent my time in the wrong areas/bars and retaurants & hotels.

If you do manage a cheap hotel, expect to be fleeced for everything else while you are there....because most things are overpriced in dublin.

We stayed at the Lyman Hotel, 5 minute walk from Temple Bar. I would recommend it.
I think it was O'Connel Street, but not sure.

On the same road the Stiffy in the Liffy is on

Side Note: Dublin is lovely! Very clean, nice wide streets, friendly people. lovely.

Dublin is filled with pretentious, selfish, ****s. I hate it, with a passion. They're so bloody rude, can't figure out how to queue at a bus-stop, and never apologise when they walk into you. Seriously, they've no manners.

Now, before people roll their eyes at me and start thinking I'm only saying that because I'm from Northern Ireland, thats not true, anywhere else in the rest of the South is filled with in general lovely people. Its just that Dublin seems to be thier dumping ground for all the complete *******.

Dublin = Ripoff and is horrible really.
People in Dublin define asholes!

I was there for a year, then I moved to County Kildare. Far cheaper and people are a lot nicer.

Must admit I wasnt keen - very expensive and a poor hotel (see post #2 above!) and it was freezing cold with a nasty wind when we went!

If you are looking for a recommendation - Andels Hotel in Prague! :D
Fantastic hotel, amazing city and cheap as chips!!!

Is there somewhere else you might be able to recommend? Galways, perhaps?

I wouldn't want to mate, no. Haven't been down South, except for Dublin in a few years now, so where I would recommend is likely to have changed.

there was a place on the south coast called Ardmore, that i used to love going to as a kid, but last time I went it was all commercialised. it looked like some generic Spanish beach resort. Sickened me to it. However there is a fantastic shipwreck up round the headland from it, unless they've removed it since for "Health and Safety" reasons.

My idea of a good holiday is fantastic scenery, and if you're after that, the Dingle Peninsula or Achill island are hard to beat. Both on the west coast, while you're over there you might as well go to Skellig Michael too.

Its a monastery, on a rock about 15km out. Awesome, slightly eerie place. :) Can't remember how we got over to it.

...but then again, this might not be your cup of tea.

Dublins effectively the same now. Like any other European city with a plethora of Irish theme pubs. You have to go outside Dublin if you want something that doesn't feel like it's being hammed up for the benefit of tourists.

Also, the thieves, they're as good in Dublin as they are in Barcelona.

Scenary is very much up my street - thats what I am after.

Still might go to Scotland instead.
