Hey,
I downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 from the official site and extracted the contents of the zip file to a folder on my windows desktop. I tried burning the contents of the extracted zip onto a dvd but the computer i wish to install it on will not boot from that disk and errors out with a disk boot failure. What do I do?

Extracted zip? Do you mean ISO?

ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso

It comes in one big file ( about 700 meg ) and you burn that one big file directly to CD. Nothing should be extracted.

the file i was linked to on the site was a zip not a iso. can you send me the link to the 8.10 iso

There you go. If that doesn't work just go to www.ubuntu.com, hit the "download" link and choose a mirror.

Hey, I apologise, all my mistake. the iso file i downloaded took the winrar zip icon and i forgot to check the file extension. Sorry guys. All fine now!

There really should be a warning when you try to write an iso file onto a disk:

You're being stupid!

[I know, just put the image file on the disk] [Ah, make a disk from the image file]
