Alright People,

I think its about time that I upgraded my 8800GTX, its been faithful to me, but Christmas is coming and, well, I have had a lot of overtime lately so I thought that I would upgrade the GPU in my computer...

I want it to be noticably faster and I'm not a fan boy, so I dont care if its nvidia or ATI as long as its worth it :)

Cheers in advance :)

I am an ATI fanboy so the 4870 x 2 is what I would go for, at around £400 they are certainly not cheap.

I don't see the point tbh. I've had my 8800GTX coming up for two years almost. I have had no slow down in any game (apart from Crysis) @ 19200 x 1200 and everything is on high. Of course, I'll get a higher benchmark score with the latest cards but they won't make my games look any different to what they do now. If you're really into willy waving then fine but otherwise I'd wait until such time you start to have to play with your settings. I say only upgrade if you have anything less than the 8800* range.

sound words of advice as usual mate... I think I will mull it over :)

tbh the only thing the GTX struggles with a reasonable resolutions is GTAIV but we don't know the problem with that yet and all the cards are struggling with it.

you considered getting another GTX to sli? this womn't help gta4 though since it does not support SLI

For that budget your looking at a 1gb 4870 or a 260 216 and neither will be a massive performance leap, it depends how much you can get for your gtx really. I would wait till atleast q1/q2 09 :)

If you're really set on upgrading now,I'd say the GTX260-216 would be the best buy.

The XFX Black edition can be bought online for £250 inc delivered, this card will match a stock GTX280 and in some cases beat it,if you go for one of the lower clocked versions then you'll save yourself £20-30 over the XFX,and with a little overclocking you'll still have close on GTX280 performance.

Still running a GTX myself and opinion seems to be somewhat divided on whether it's still capable enough in latest gen games@ high res and settings,I think it is,but other members on here will bite your head off for suggesting so.

I would say DX9 and the GTX are well suited,if on the other hand your running the latest games in DX10 and insist on max settings and AA then an upgrade to the 260-216 or 48701GB will imo serve you well, the GTX280 and 4870X2 are well over priced, and should be avoided imo.

I wouldnt bother upgrading

My 8800GTX died and I replaced it with a GTX280 , its quicker but not worth
spending a bucket load of cash quicker. I got my GTX280 for £240 inc vat

Dont get me wrong if you have money to throw away go for it , just dont expect
an earth shattering difference in games.

If my 8800GTX hadnt of died I would still be using it , my 8800GTX worked really
well in nearly all games ( except crysis of course cos those tards cant program for excrement )

I game at 1920x1200 FYI

I've been tempted in the past too, but the cost just doesn't justify the improvement. I'm holding onto my 8800GTX for the moment until something comes along that blows it out the water - so far that hasn't happened.

Just gone from an 8800GTX to one of these myself after reading all the positive reviews that ranked it around 280 performance. I figured the prices of the 280s weren't coming down soon - I doubt if even the refresh will bring the price of the original 280s down to £250ish (Still kicking myself, like many others, for not snapping one up when they were ~£240 a few months ago).

So far I'm impressed without being overwhealmed with the card - I knew it wouldnt be a massive upgrade but I was struggling to run a few games @1900x1200 especially in DX10 and it does let me do that. Runs cool too, plus a few reviews have it clocking well over 700 on the core (haven't tried so far).

I got mine for £225 which I thought was a pretty good deal, especially as it was bundled with FC2 (which incidentally is in the box, you don't have to claim it via some voucher).

Just put a 260 GTX in my rig and after my first benchmark it is about 50% faster than my 8800GTX ... subjectively though in far cry 2 it is a better experience but I could actually play this at 1920x1080 previously so would I do it again - well, Yes I would! Mainly because the upgrade is softened by a decent deal on my 8800GTX ....

My first overclock attempt was at 700/1150/1509 ... I will find out later what it can do but I daresay I'll see very little actual improvement over those clocks!!

If your going to upgrade then consider a GTX260 core 216. Plays everything fine at 1920x1200 and it does give a nice boost coming from a 8800GTX with the latest drivers.
