Can't decide: G1 or HTC Touch?

I am looking for a new contract mobile phone to replace my current Pay as you Go. After looking around online I have narrowed it down to these 2 contenders. Before I go into a shop to have a play I would like to hear some opinions of these 2 in direct competition.

What is important to me is mobile internet, emails and to check on things online (wiki, Facebook, forums etc). GPS implementation - I'd like to have the ability to quickly check for directions along with ongoing instructions for when out travelling.

As for actual phone functions, I am not a heavy user and so 100 minutes and 50 texts will be more than enough.

The G1 is quite a bit cheaper at £30 a month on Tmobile with Web And Walk for 700minutes/1400texts...

The HTC has an amazing screen though, Windows Mobile means TomTom can be installed...

So what are your views? How do these 2 phones compare?

Thanks.

You're in the same boat as me my friend, and it's a rowing boat that's goin NOWHEEEERRRREEE :D

Seriously though, as much as it is doing my head in choosing my next mobile I have also narrowed it down to these 2 phones, although I started a thread earlier asking for advice on which to get between these two and the x1 as well.

Since then I've read too much info now about how bad the X1 signal is (paying attention to the thread someone started on that just recently on this forum)...

So, same boat.

The G1 I've worked out is gonna cost me about 450 quid (18 months) on the 20 combi plan.

The HD is gonna cost me £630 (18 months) so a big price difference.

I'm trying to ascertain whether or not its worth paying the extra. I luurrrrve the look of the HD and have been obsessed with the bloody thing for about 3 weeks now, I can't stop thinking about it!

However, though the G1 isn't as good looking I love the sound of the OS and its potential, the only draw back I think to getting the G1 is that come summer time next year there will be a far better Android phone packed with more features and better on the hardware generally...

I don't think the same can be said for the Touch HD, I think it will still be a flash git come summer time and I could well imagine myself showing it off to anyone who wants a look at the sexy beast :D

I don't care for GPS on phones as I have a very nice tom tom and that could be sync'd with the HD nicely, not sure about the G1.

Also I'd proooooobably prefer the WinMo as I'm a PC fan boy, sole trader pc engineer and as such have all my contacts / calendar etc. in Outlook '07 - a lot friendlier with HD than G1.

The HD would win it for me if it was the same price as the G1, I prefer the HD, but the G1 is not a bad phone at all, and it is a helluva lot cheaper .....

<back to running around in circles> :)

Well - from what I've seen of the HD, it doesn't quite live upto the hype. Nice screen, but it doesn't look as bright as a G1/iPhone, video playback is pretty poor (will we ever see videos at native resolution being played back?).

And I don't really like resistive touchscreens, so that swings it for me.

after weeks of dithering i've plunged for the G1 black £15 per month combi plan - at the end of the day I thought - a phone is a phone, I have a decent camera/GPS etc. I just need something make and receive calls - and the android OS looks v exciting :)

Yeah best of both worlds really would be android ON the HD, HD is sublime hardware neutered by WinMo as always, and android has excellent potential (it's not there totally yet) but let down by its hardware!
