Advantage 1gb over 512mb card?

Thinking about upgrading my card and just wondering what's the advantage 1gb card over 512mb card? Is it just resolution? I'll be using 1680x1050 resolution with 22" monitor.

Only advantage is resolution as far as ive seen and seeing as the 1GB versions of cards are like £10-£20 more id just go for the 1GB anyway.
 
1GB will be more futureproof if you ever decide to play at a higher resolution/upgrade your monitor. If the price difference is negligable you may aswell get the 1GB :p

However 512mb should be adequate for that resolution, somebody may correct me though
 
At the same resolution and clock speeds there will be nothing in it speed wise, unless the 1GB uses lower ns chips which I doubt, what card is it by the way? If you can afford the £22 get it for piece of mind and futureproofing!

Thanks a lot as if hardly any point getting the 1gb i might just get the 512mb and can get Red Alert 3 for the difference :)

But also i'm thinking about getting another 1 and crossfire in around February :)

Well the 4870 already sees pretty large gains at 1920x1080 with 1GB over 512MB in a few titles. If you're gonna be using that card for a year or more, you might find the memory requirements go over 512MB of memory usage at lower resolutions and performance settings in newer games over that time.
 
Just been playing Crysis on my new 260 GTX with the display info on the screen ... max settings @ 1650x1050 mostly in XS of 30fps & very smooooth - the memory value went up to 1140 MB !! Now I wish I had got me the 280 instead!! :D Nah, not really - but I bet that accounts for some difference in performance on the 280!

ok thx do you think a seasonic 430 will handle the card ? i have 2 hds and 2 dvd drives and sound card in my rig thats all.

ps.sorry to derail thread but im on the buy button as we speak.

at the moment i have a 8800 gts 640 card.

430Watts, I doubt it, I thought Id upgrade my old system by buying one card and putting it in but I didnt have enough power, and that was a 600Watt, but it was an old PSU and PSU's do lose efficiency as they get older. So anyway in the end I went out and bought a new system (any excuse :) )

Probably, i have two seriously OCed 4870's and my system only uses around 500watts @ load including my monitor. There is an argument however that you need at least 25% more capacity than you use at load to allow for spikes etc. Might just be easier to go with your existing PSU and measure the watts at load once you have your 4870. If you have less than 25% headroom then buy another PSU.
