It's not often the Carling Cup gets to upstage another competition, but for tonight atleast it'll be keeping the UEFA Cup at the back of the class.

Man City -

Hart

Zabaleta Dunne Ben-Haim Garrido

Ireland Kompany Elano

Sturridge Vassel Jo

I honestly can't remember the last time I saw Man City, Villa or Pompey supporters in these threads. Usually in the league other people can be cheering/booing them depending on who they're playing.

Someone please tell me that David Pleat isn't co-commentating on the Villa game.

apart from North East Team / The Big 4/ and strangely Wigan and Fulham, I don't notice (personally) that many other supporters of clubs. Oh and Leeds

Watching the match

Very disappointed in the result, but was always likely to happen withn the team MON put out. He needed to do it though and i suppose last night was as good a time as any to try it.

I think the referee could have done a little more to protect our players in the latter stages of the second half. People whinge about Ronaldo getting kicked but Ashley Young got clattered all over the field last night and only one player was booked for it. At least he didn't sit on the grass and sulk though ;)

Delfouneso looks like he'll be quality, but Harewood i think needs to go which is a shame as I like him as a player when he's on form. He just doesn't have it often enough unfortunatley :(

Defensively they were awful for the second goal and Knight made a bit of a howler for the first. I think he decided too late that if he headed it it was going in, if he'd left it Guzman would probably have made the save. The second goal was woeful, but was always a possibility considering they haven't played together enough.

Anyway we're through and I quite fancy our chances against Hamberg :D

He'll put another weakened side out as we're already through. I think MON shouldn't do that, however. He needs to keep the top players active at European level playing against decent teams like Hamburg, but give the fringe players a run out for the last 20-25 minutes. Keeps everyone happy.

Knight needs to go. He had a chance to prove himself last night and threw it in the bin. Zilina embarassed us and made us look like we were playing Barcelona. Their second goal was quality, no doubt, as was Delfouneso's, but we just had no desire to win it.

It was a team of strangers and players who just are not good enough. I'd say only these will still be at the club come August next year:

Guzman
L Young
A Young
Salifou (He was ill and can be excused)
Delfouneso
Reo Coker (Not at RB though)
Cueller

The rest of them will be replaced. Harewood clearly isn't capable of sustaining the form he had for that season at West Ham (Real shame, i like him), Osbourne I don't think will cut it, Knight hasn't settled and I think assuming Barry stays Gardner is surplus to requirements with Sidwell, Salifou and Petrov being very similar players.

However it's not a disaster, Guzman will be better than Friedel IMO and Delfouneso will be better than Agbonlahor. They have the right manager in charge and he will not burn them out and risk them unecesserily. I think it will be all hands to the pump to win at Hamburg, MON will want to win the group.

Zilina were no slouches, while this was the only game they won they did not embarrass themselves in any of their other matches. It's always against us that these teams seem to find the next level!
