Medieval Total War III ?

Will empire total war just be naval warfare? because I haven't seen any land combat screenies.

In one of the trailer vids there is a short sequence of a couple of battalions firing a volley at each other, or was that a render (or my imagination :p)?
Anyway, I've definitely seen some screenshots of a land battle, which looked blooming awesome.

Have a look at links in the big Empire thread (you'll need to search for it) they should be there.

They're just promoting the naval aspect of the game over land battles because it's a new addition to the series.

Regarding the 'which period next?' question, I think I'd like to see an updated Shogun. Let's face it, the last three [four, if you include ETW] theatres have been focussed around Continental Europe, and I think it's time for a change. Not just the Japanese islands, but encompassing more of East Asia.

I was actually thinking that the colonizations of Africa could make a pretty good one-for some reason Africa has never really been given much time in the TW series, despite being pretty important, particularly in Roman times.

I think the series is heading towards modern warfare - WW1 might be possible but anything after that will give the current engine a headache. I'm not really that keen on the idea myself. I prefer ancient/medieval. The scope of Rome was simply awesome. An upgraded engine and Rome II would be amazing. Probably my favourite of the series to date.

By the way as for addons, Darth Ages has just released 8.4. I've been busy beta testing it and I can vouch it rocks :)

I replayed Rome a few weeks ago and realised how much better the map and buildings were. It was only the battles with 1000mph horses that got to me. The units are really interesting and there was a lot more diversity than in MTW2 for me. Personally i always thought that Shogun and MTW1 were the best as they werent dumbed down, there were for the strategy lovers

Yep, the battles in MTW1 were the highpoint of the series-for that matter, the map section of that game was also fantastic. It's sadly gone downhill :(

Considering the amount of people that think this I'm amazed that there isn't a mod in progress to get MTW1 going on the MTW2 engine a la Black Mesa. How amazing would that be?!

EDIT: Obviously by the MTW2 engine, I don't mean changing the campaign map for the style of MTW2...

there is a mod to make the map similar like mtw i beleive. But to change how th game works and all that is simply to much. Shame, but like ive said in another thread the trend of the games market for many years now has been getting dumber.

Micro management and resource management in RTS especialy is getting more and more dumbed down. There where days when you ahd to do everything your self and it was hard and as a result the pros were real pro and the noobs sucked bad. Now its all dumbed down and has taken a lot of the skills away from the finger tips of people who really know their stuff.

I remeber when the ai didn't just target the nearest person the moment someone went out of range and units followed their targets. Allowing you to totaly out micro huge armys online against peoplew ho didn't understand how to do it. Now youve got games like supreme comander who even have the ai built in telling them which is the bset target to hit.

I can only see it getting worse, do new RTS games even require moer then 1 resource now?

i know, but they are useless anyway really. You wouldn't spend your cash on them when you can get other things, maybe at the very start of the game but not mid or late. a lot of the units in the game are not worth the buy.

Billmen are cheap though, and good for the price until the later period.

they arnt that cheap. Kings body guard, the armoured spearmen and archers all you need till you get dismounted knights. Infact i fight a lot of battles just with a few unist of generals body guard. Easy to manipulate the ai even on the hardest settings. Used 7 generals for a few big ones lol.

the hardest AI isn't really much harder than the easiest I found, there all rubbish, they never seem to use any tactics other than flanking your sides sometimes.

Also billmen are fine if used properly against heavy cavalry. I use sherwood archers and longbowmen as much as possible.

sherwood archers pwn there excellent as archers, and can fight hand to hand well as well, they just lack a bit in defence, but there attach rivals most heavy infantry.

WW1 might just work - it was the last war fought with napoleonic tactics - but on an epic scale of course. Off map artillery could be modelled, naval warfare, aerial warfare even, and then it could turn into a Close Combat type of game, but I honestly can't see it. I don't know how they would deal with the other aspects, and for this reason alone I reckon they will back track again. I'm drawling over images of Rome II.. :D

As for which mod is better - I'm obviously biased. Darth Ages takes literally an age to play. You can't blitz anymore. There have been huge improvements, far to many to list here. Stainless Steel is ok but it's like comparing chalk and cheese.

Yep I think WWI may work too. It would be a radical change of direction for the developers instead of the tried and tested method of a newer Rome/MW/Shogun. A big risk but one that needs to be taken. There is only so much swords and sandals you can take before the genre becomes stale. Look at the WWII FPS scene, we are all sick of it now...
