Grand Theft Auto 4

Game ran OK for me on my 2.5 GHz Opteron 165 and EVGA 8800 GTS 640MB SC at 1680x1050. Settings had it looking more or less like the 360 version and it played as such. An eventual patch and overclock to 3.0GHz should smooth things out.

So what controllers are people using?

In times of the credit crunch now is not the time to release a poor game..

What does the lack of credit have to do with a 25 quid game. I wish people would stop throwing the word CREDIT CRUNCH around without having a clue.

Because when people start tightening their belts they aren't going to spend it on crap.. Shall we change the word to RECESSION then!

So is it possible to use a NONE XBOX360 controller with this? Using Xpadder or what? I dont want to go out and pay for an Xbox 360 Controller for Windows (Even though they are really nice) when I have a perfectly good controller already...

So many posts, so many posts; It's bound to have been asked before, but please just hunour me:

Once the game has been registered on-line with all the knick-knacks and bells and whistles, will I then be able to play it and save off (single player) after that, if I disconnect my PC from the net?

I only want to play the single-player game, and I want to be able to take my machine with me without connecting all the time. Is this possible?

Me buying it is soley dependent on that.

Tried the *cough* and got any extra 2FPS. But at least I no longer have to put the dvd in the drive for a game I legally bought & paid for as well as activated online etc etc.

I can still use Windows LIVE ingame & am logged into the R* Social Club as well so looks like as long as you have a legal copy you can still use all the games features minus the annoying keeping the DVD in the drive all the time. 28Kb file as well so the other 4.8Mb was all protection code!!! Laughable really why not concentrate on making the 5.02MB exe about performance and just do an online check at random.

R* will patch this out quickly unless they have sold a lot of copies already. Usually via Windows LIVE it will refuse to run unless you patch it so you may get stranded in offline mode until you do.

Its possible but you will lose the ability to save progress with your Windows LIVE online account so need to create an offline one as well and switch between the 2 otherwise you will have to play offline from the start of the game again. Obviously the online features will be unavailable as well if not connected.

Anyone know if its worth putting my old 8800gtx back in because its got 768mb vram rather than the 512mb on my 4870?

Id be happy running 1920x1200, medium textures but at the moment, coz of the limit, I can only have low textures.

what do yall think?

Cheers AWPC, that's OK by me. I just don't want to have to log into Windows LIVE all the time just to be able to save my off-line games. If I've understood you right, that's the case? Sorry, bit of a dense morning.

I've given the game another try and have got it running halfway decently now. The framerate is usually 35-40 and fairly smooth, so it is playable. I figured I should try to get some enjoyment out of it in return for the $47 I'm out.

I'm using these settings, FWIW.

Yeah thats right but obviously you will lose the gamerscore achievements with your offline profile as they only update when you have an online profile logged into LIVE.

ok, i have gave this game a secend chance and now i am playing through this now although its still kinda terrible!
try this: set resolution to exactly the same as your desktop, set those 2 graphic options to medium/medium, all the 'bars' below, slam them all the way down, save these settings, now exit the game and resart comp (ok, this is a bit of a pain and we shouldn't have to put up with this in the modern age of gaming that we live in) but most should find that this makes the game 'playable' im not sure if im going to complete this game yet but its ok for now  also: don't login to social club, and create an offline account on LIVE so you can still save your games without being logged in to anything, unless you want to play online, but with single player being so slow i don't recommend going online :D

EDIT: if this fails please refer to post #1462 (page: 49) for further assistance

I can't understand why the game won't allow AA, when all XBOX titles have to run 4xAA, and DirectX 10 is supposed to be easily translatable from the XBOX development kit?

With all the copy protection stuff and being forced to sign up for the social club to play the game, this stinks of a quick cash in for those who didn't buy the game on a console.

You dont have to login into social club unless you want to play online. You just click on skip login.

There has been protections in the past that has caused in game slow downs i think it was starforce?

Starforce is the WORST copyright protection ever ... it installs itself everywhere and you can never fully uninstall it without going into your registry :(

@ AWPC: Thanks again. I'll go out and get it then. Hope I don't run into any of the problems mentioned here. Can't believe what R* is up to, talk about punishing the honest while not really acomplishing anything.

By the way, I came across a R* interview a few days back, claiming that if *coughs* were used, the game would appear to run normally, but do really screwy things after a while. Anyone run into this yet? Probably a bit like The Settlers 4, where the 'liberated' copies had windmills producing boats all of a sudden.
