Grand Theft Auto 4

Yeah those shadows are pure awful for me as well, very dotted and pixelated. Tree's are the same (not the shadows, the actual tree branches/leaves). Game runs very well for me though with a mix of medium/high settings @ 1360x768 which I was suprised with when people were saying they get 20 fps on low with their super computers from space.

I have everything on max apart from view distance which is set to 38 not 100. It's not picking up my 2nd GFX card (total 2gb) but only picking up 1gb so it will not let me go any higher :(

I think in SLI/Xfire the gfx cards need to hold identical data in both sets of ram, so effective max will be 1gb (or 892mb in my case).

Anyone help me with performance.

Specs are:

AMD 2.8Ghz Tri-Core
2GB RAM
ATI Radeon 5770 1GB

It stutters all over the shop, even on lower resolutions.

Should a tri core be able to play it OK?

i would imagine ur 2GB of ram is defineatly holding it back. i have 6GB of ram and while running GTA4 its using 70-90% of the ram in total!

Performance wise I found that upgrading to a hard drive with a bigger cache (16MB to 32MB) made the game a lot smoother. I have a mate with a similar spec but better gfx (gtx260) and lower HD cache (8MB) and the game cannot manage anything above 20fps.

OH MY WORD.

Never thought to check but my Steam install is to a drive with only a 8MB cache... Mmm, I wonder what other problems this is causing - LOL

Will swap to one of the 16MB Cache drives.

Thanks.

I think the game normally updates through GFWL if you don't do it manually first, though I recall the main patches coming to steam eventually, but delayed.

is there any aa yet? other than pressing p.
i'm tempted to install again
No AA yet

Yes there is, it's been there for ages, but it really needs a lot of gpu power as it uses supersampling...

Well....

3 years +
2 complete system upgrades and an i7 later...

I am able to play the game without any stutter or skip or plain awful performance.

AMAZING.

I will do my best to not spam the thread with "The cake is a lie" type comments as I progress.

See you guys in 5 years when I play GTA V.

I had a similar take though I used to play a bit more on dual core low res. Just finished bogt with everything on max, if I'd dropped traffic density a bit it'd run better I think. Hitches every now and again even though its loaded from SSD

I'll also wait for gta v to go on sale for a fiver in a couple years. All the stories connect, so Im not sure it matters which part is done first since its one thread anyway.

Is there any big GTA4 multiplayer server

GFWL - Games For Windows Live
what happens when they scrap that
