Please read if you have a noisy PS3...

My release ps3 is silent for 10mins then fan speeds up a little bit so is just audible, then 10mins later it turns into a dyson. I am also sure it never used to be THIS loud.

My 60Gb did this.. in the end Sony replaced it, and the replacement was silent...

I think the model number is on the box (under a big barcode iirc). It will probably also be on the back of the console itself I imagine.

All consoles turn out at fan level 1 which is practically inaudible at 10 feet.

A quiet (i.e. normal) console ramps up to level 2 which is a very faint whisper, and stays there about 90% of the time - maybe going to level 3 in summer or when running the F@H client.

A noisy console will ramp up at idle to level 3 or even 4 which is very noisy, then go even noisier when you play a game or run F@H. Obviously you expect the fan to ramp up when it's loaded, but level 3 is too loud (subjectively) for quiet dialogue when watching a DVD, hence my beef with it!

Cheers,

Suman

That was what I was after.

Mine is 1, then 2 idle at xmb, 3 after a while at load dependant on room temperature then will drop down to 2 after 1-10 minutes on the xmb.

Consoles that used to be silent but are now noisy are probably full of dust and/or cigarette smoke :p

Try using compressed air or a vacuum cleaner to get rid of some of it!

I bought a compressed air can a couple of years ago and it excreted significant amount of water or some other clear liquid. Not suitable for electronic devices as I thought otherwise. Does your compressed air can produce any liquid whatsoever?

You have to hold the can upright so it won't chuck out water.

I have one of these noisy PS3s, it really annoys me to the point where I can't watch a film using it. Its fine for gaming, as I am used to the noise of the 360's disc drive.

Extreme shakeage + Upright holding and the Straw plugged into the end generally cuts down the liquid that squirts out. But just so you know, The liquid dries pretty much on contact and I've been using it for years in PCs and never had a problem, That includes when the liquid expels into the system,

I don't know. With a £425 machine that is out of warranty I would rather not risk letting any liquid in. I would far rather take the console apart and then clean it that way or vacuum any loose dust out. It is out of warranty after all.

Could all you guys with 60GB consoles please let me know about the air flow and hottest part of the consoles please. (Details in first post).

Cheers,

Suman

Ive got a fairly noisy 60Gb, its normally on level 1-2 on XMB but hits level 3+ pretty much straight away in a game then will go back to level 2 if left in XMB for a while. Pretty much all the air flow is coming out the big main vent on the far right hand side (as its lying down). Its quite warm to touch the underside part with the 2 seperate grills (pretty much no airflow from those vents), but the middle plastic bit joining them is probably the hottest area to touch.

Actually. I just blew extremely hard into the back and front vents of my PS3 and the amount of dust that came flying out at whichever way it could find was substancial. Going to see if there is a difference in fan noise during tonights Resistance 2 co-operative bash.

Hmm cool that's interesting... noisy consoles (and newer, but quiet ones) generally seem to vent more air from the back.

So bad, must not do, that is not a cleaning process.

Can that damage the fan? I've done it a couple of times on my 40gb just to help it keep clean...

It was in an article I read back in the summer?... or there about. Sony responded to it. It does something that causes it to overheat the unit that then kicks in the fan causing it to ramp it up to cool it back down. I can't remember what the purpose was for.

It's some testing procedure that only works on the 40GB models. It's not in anyway meant for clearing dust out and they said if you keep doing, it will damage your unit.

A quick search...

Silly google translator.

After a little investigation on our part, it is advisable to manually turn the fans of the Playstation 3 as we will show in a previous news (see here).
Indeed, it could in the long term only damage certain components of the Playstation 3 as the CPU or GPU. Of course, if you have only briefly been tested, you do not have to worry.

But we strongly advise you to realize this manipulation many times, and at regular intervals. Neither UltimatePS3 or other person that you can not be held responsible for the incident.

EDIT: Sony strongly this manipulation. This could damage some components of the PS3 in the long term. Neither UltimatePS3 or other person that you can not be held responsible for the incident.

Hmm I don't see how that could actually damage the console, but best to avoid doing it anyway I guess...

My 19-blade fan came today, so I will fit it into my launch 60GB PS3 and let you know if it makes a difference... if not it's off to the bay of E :p

I'm guessing i have the 15 blade fan on my PS3 aswell.

I really want to rip it apart and clean it but if it aint broke why fix it...

My PS3 fans really kick off when I'm playing video files. So annoying as it becomes the loudest thing in my room. You get used to it after a minute though. Guess I've gained the ability to ignore noise after my PC and Xbox360, but still, it annoys me when people say their PS3's are whisper quiet and mine drowns out both my PC and Xbox360 :(.
