What is all the hoohaa abuot a DNA database - bring it on!

Your DNA profile will be linked with your other data from when you're arrested, such as your name, address, sex and race.

Yes? So? How will a DNA profile be of any use to anyone set on dastardly deeds? (The argument we keep seeing coming up over and over)

I have no concern over the data being stored purely for criminal investigation but we all know that it wouldn't stop there, no government database stays private for long. They would soon be selling access rights to life insurance companies so they can check you profile for long term inherited problems and up your premium acordingly etc. Anyone who says this would never happen look at the criminal records database - now used routinely for job appointments and pointlessly in a lot of cases or the DVLA databse which is available to clampers for a fee. There will be more and more uses for you DNA as our understanding of it progresses don't base your decision on what we know now once this information is in a database it is there forever.

Giving the Governemtn vast amounts of data will only lead to trouble.

Those could getout anyway even right now.

The DNA added on to that means nothing

But it does mean yet another government database with my personal details on it so yet another government database where it can be lost from. If someone keeps misplacing data would you be happy for them to hold more of it?

thats unnaceptable. thats 1 in 13mil is far worse than i thought. this is bound to lead to people being arrested for crimes they didnt commit. even if they end up being found not guilty or it never gets that far because the correct person comes along there is no way to reverse the damage already done.

no they wont be arrested, it will be the same as if you are any of the people they have an interest in, you be asked to come in for questioning, you refuse then they'll probbably go get permission to arrest you and bring you in forcefully.

What damage exactly?

Unless they find your DNA as skin under a dead hookers finger nails they won;t arrest you. And to be fir if your skin is there you have some pretty quick explaining to do anyway.

They would have a hard job doing that as your DNA profile tells you nothing medically useful at all.

No it means an amendment to the existing data base, no need to make a new one.

considering they've had your tax returns for the last 40 odd years did you ever worry they would be leaked?

Or did this sudden fear of data loss only occur in the last 5 or so years?

Maybe someone can clarify this... But I don't believe a DNA profile is of any use for that. It's not a full DNA mapping, just the key points to fingerprint it.

Someone?

But it means more data being stored on said database. So rather than just criminal records it becomes general records. It is a database I am not currently on and would kind of like to stay that way :D

Neil, I take it you're also in favour of CCTV cameras everywhere too? Maybe the police having a full cross-check database of all our personal information? If they could put microchips in our arms to track us, would that be ok?

EDIT: I can feel a full-blown post coming on.

Liberty and freedom, innocent until proven guilty etc the fundamentals of a free society. Its eroding as it is. Once gone, crime will not be the only worry.

It may currently just be a finger print but once you've given the government the power too take a DNA sample at birth how long before it esculates, you argument is nieve at best and you advocacy of a police state ridiculous.

Id gladdy have CCTV cameras up around every Metre of every Street in Adelaide.

What a simple solution to finding out what really happened, Whos was fighting which who and which biker gang was doing the drive bys.
It would clean things up almost straight away.
And if they do catch me scratching me arse or picking my nose then good for them, I hope it gives them a laugh:p

What's that blocking out the sun? The hugest straw man has just been contructed I've ever scene!

Let's set the scene... Eveneone's DNA is put in a database? Any possible issues are completely outscaled by the positives... There you go.

And these 'possible issues' of course have yet to even be mentioned on this thread. So far we've just had immotive rants against it.

Esculates into what?
