What is all the hoohaa abuot a DNA database - bring it on!

So far the only reasoned argument against a DNA database with any real merit and thought has come from Tefal... ie: the complexity/cost of it...

So +10 points to Tefal!

Again, as you seem to be ignoring them....

1. It is yet another database where your personal details are kept on file and so yet another opportunity for the government to lose them. Given their current track record if they were a private company I wouldn't do business with them. And before you say "What use would a DNA profile be?", the profile itself will also be stored with your personal details, name, address, contact details, probably race and a myriad other details the police are allowed to hold.

2. We have a long history of "Innocent until proven guilty" in this country. Can you give me any reason to hold my DNA details that does not presume that I may commit a crime in the future?

You may well be quite happy to throw away this little bit of unimportant (to you at least) liberty for some extra security. It may seem perfectly acceptable to you. It isn't to me.

The bigger question though is, why would you not want to be on the DNA database... In effect your own selfish concept of importance - my DNA is too important to be on a database - is actually increasing crime and even costing lives. Yep, it could be argued to be as black and white as that to me...

Get a grip.

that's just silly.

To prove you innocent should you be wrongfully accused?

ie to disprove a statement that you where at the scene, or just so they can exclude you from inquires without having to question you.

A DNA database is one of the few government databases I'm in support of.

I hate the idea of a national id card with biometrics - we have national id numbers already, just get off your arses and make sure employers are using them once in a while.

But DNA? I don't really care who knows my DNA and it *will* help catch criminals, it's not hurting me and will do some good - how many government schemes can you say that about?

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

The only point you think is valid, so are we to assume only your allowed to decide? Ridiculous.

Oh, the one thing about it (like so many things) is the completely random way it's being done - sneaked in so to speak.

Should just push a nice shiny new law through that forces dna sampling on every member of the population. Nice and fair, and the police can actually get the maximum benefit straight away.

Not at all:-

(1) Give me my DNA profile, and I'll happily hand it out in the streets! I'll post it on the web... It's of so little importance. I suspect even you'd do it. Now, post JUST your bank account number and name... You wouldn't would you, would you!

People put too much importance on their magic DNA profile... It's nothing!

(2) Because EVERY criminal was innocent at sometime!

Why do you need to register your car, unless it's assumed you might drive away from an accident?

Again, we see some moralistic jargon being bantered around just because a meaningless list of DNA patterns are held somewhere.

Let's say your (& everyone's DNA sequence) on a database means countless criminals are caught quickly. And multiple crimes and murders are prevented... You're basically saying that little warm (unfounded) feeling in your tummy is more important... OK...

Going back to my gun ownership analogy. I'd love to own a gun. It would make ME feel safer in many ways. HOWEVER, I realise my selfish take on it is outweighed by the greater good to society. ie: Me NOT being allowed to own a gun, means every nutter out there can't either.

Though I'd rather NOT have my DNA in a database, I'll take one for the team for the benefit to society. And when I say 'take one for the team', the cost to me is.... nothing...

Same as you do with people who refuse to have their finger prints taken...

I've never had my fingerprints taken, and no action has been taken. Is that what you're suggesting?

If the police want to check my DNA against a list of convicted criminals or against DNA found at the scene of a crime then fine. As long as that data is destroyed if a match isn't found.

.

You ever been asked for your fingerprints?

Cause if the answers no your logic fails harder than the spruce moose.

The dna database is a great way to frame someone, I can see it becoming a profitable business for criminals. Plant someones hair at a crime scene and the police go after them because they can match the dna against the database!

Then of course there's the victimless crimes that people could be arrested for.

And in the future gene therapy which will cause loads of problems for the database, it's already falliable because of identical twins.

You said earlier that it wasn't a magic bullet, and yet it appears to be able to solve crime in this country over night....

I guess this means that we'll have not police free to do road traffic patrols so we can take the speed cameras down and we won't need CCTV anymore so that can be dismantled as well.

The possible savings are endless.

You are assuming it is of benefit and it will only be of no harm to innocent individuals in society if it is maintained perfectly. As you mentioned earlier, we dont live in a perfect world.

Finding your DNA would make you a suspect but normal police works takes over from that point - if your a known drug dealer who lives in that area and has no aliby then yes you could be in trouble.

I dunno, I think this is one of the things that should have a referendum..

Ok that's utter BS, but i think it should have one cause I reckon the fear mongers will get it voted no.

You do understand that the detectives and forensics teams arn't utterly retarded?

Anyone who thinks that is sadly mistaken - but catching just one rapist should be enough.
