Internet streaming audio - is it mono or stereo?

Yes, it is.

It could be either... really depends what your listening to. I imagine most stuff these days would be stereo.

Really? That doesnt seem right.....

To the OP I have a Freecom internet radio, it only has one speaker, cant say I've ever thought about it until now. It sounds fine.

No hes right, completely illegal to stream in stereo. Only DTS and mono.

Well, ive got an internet radio with the stereo out on the back, and its certainly in stereo . . Plays Radio 1 fine. Though that does explain why they only have 1 speaker on them!

If you listen to stereo streams from other countries you can be arrested, as far as I know it's one of the only crimes still on the books you can be executed for.

It breaches the internet broadcasting act 2001 section 54.

1. Internet broadcasting of stereo data.

(1) A person (A) commits an offence if—

(a) He broadcasts or receives live radio audio over the internet in the stereo format,

(b) (A) knowingly broadcasts/(streams)/receives this information, and,

(c) (A) does not have special permission to do so granted by the radio licensing authority

(2) Sections 58 and 59 apply to an offence under this section.

(3) A person guilty of an offence under this section is liable, on conviction on indictment, to imprisonment for a term of 2 years.

Yes I received a letter from a legal firm (I believe it was Davenport Lyons), informing me that they had detected that I had been listening to radio streaming in stereo, and asking for a payment equal to the wages of the hosts for the period I had been listening.

No they're bang on the money, I got caught listening to a underground stereo internet radio station. I got of with a fine, but they took all but one speaker of my surround sound kit. So now I have to game in mono too
